Apparatus (10) for the concentration and beneficiation of particulate matter by froth flotation employs a constriction plate (14) which separates vertically arranged flotation (17) and hydraulic (18) compartments. A discharge duct (29) may be used to extend through the hydraulic compartment (18) and to open through the constriction plate (14) centrally thereof. Orifices (16) in the constriction plate (14) are in communication with the hydraulic compartment (18) to provide a uniform dispersion of air bubbles in the flotation compartment (17). Aerated water distribution manifolds (22, 42) within the hydraulic compartment (18) and within the lower portion of the flotation compartment (17) are provided to enter the aerated water into the flotation compartment substantially uniformly throughout a horizontal cross-section thereof. In order to minimize the energy consumption of the apparatus (10) and to provide for the introduction of aerated water at a reduced flow rate, amenable to the separation of aqueous pulps having a low concentration of solid matter by volume, such as sulfides, a stream of pressurized air is passed through an eductor (53) wherein a mixture of water and, if desired, an appropriate surfactant is aspirated into the stream of flowing pressurized air. The flowing stream of pressurized air and the aspirated water and surfactant are then passed through a venturi region (59), producing a highly aerated, low water volume stream of aerated water for delivery to the hydraulic compartment (18).

57 An improved method and apparatus for froth flotation separation of the components of a slurry, having particular utility for the beneficiation of coal by the flotation separation of coal particles from impurities associated therewith such as ash and sulfur. In this arrangement, a forward product stream is formed in which a first quantity of chemical reagents is mixed with the particulate matter slurry. The treated particulate matter slurry is then sprayed through a nozzle onto the surface of water in a forward stream flotation tank to create a floating froth phase containing therein a first quantity of the particulate matter. The remainder of the particulate matter slurry separates from the froth phase by sinking in the water, and the froth phase is separated as a first product. The remainder of the particulate matter slurry is then directed to a scavenger product stream in which an additional quantity of chemical reagents is mixed with the remainder of the separated particulate matter slurry. The mixture is then sprayed through a second nozzle onto the surface of water in a second scavenger stream flotation tank to create a floating froth phase containing therein a second quantity of the particulate matter. The remainder of the particulate matter slurry separates from the second froth phase by sinking in the water, and the second froth phase is then separated as a second product. The amounts of the products recovered in the first and second product streams are substantially independently adjustable by controlling the amounts and types of chemical reagents added in each stream.

An electroflotation apparatus for removing impurities from waste water is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an electrolytic cell for treating the waste water and generating a flock containing the impurities as well as an outlet pipe having a linear central axis located co-axially with the electrolytic cell for passing the water and flock from the electrolytic cell to a separation area. The outlet pipe comprises a first end connected to the electrolytic cell and having a first diameter, as well as a second end through which the treated water and flock exit the outlet pipe, the second end having a second diameter. A length extends between the first diameter and the second diameter. The ratio of the second diameter to the first diameter is between 1.5:1 and 6:1. The ratio of the length to the first diameter is between 7:1 and 45:1. The outlet pipe reduces the turbulence of the treated water from the electrolytic cell before the treated water is passed to the separation area such that aggregation of the flock in the separation area is increased.

A water treatment system includes an inlet line, a tank in fluid communication with the inlet line to receive therefrom a fluid flow comprising hydrocarbons and water. The tank includes components configured to separate the fluid flow into a hydrocarbon flow and a water flow, with the water flow including a residual amount of hydrocarbons. A first outlet line is in fluid communication with the tank to discharge therefrom the water flow. A second outlet line is in fluid communication with the tank to discharge therefrom the hydrocarbon flow. A sensor is associated with one of the inlet line, the first outlet line, and the second outlet line, and a valve is associated with the second outlet line. In addition, a controller is configured to determine a property of at least one of the fluid flow, the hydrocarbon flow, and the water flow using the sensor, and to control the valve based upon the property so as to reduce the residual amount of hydrocarbons in the water flow.
