The present invention relates to a method for preparing a metal oxide containing precious metals, which can be used for a catalyst for purifying automobile exhaust gases and has excellent heat resistance and, more particularly, to a method for preparing a metal oxide containing precious metals including the step of continuously reacting a reaction mixture, including (i) water, (ii) a water-soluble precious metal compound, (iii) a water-soluble cerium compound and (iv) at least one water-soluble metal compound selected from the group consisting of a zirconium compound, a scandium compound, a yttrium compound and a lanthanide metal compound other than a cerium compound, at a temperature from 2000 C to 700° C. and at a pressure from 180 bar to 550 bar, wherein the molar ratio of precious metal to metal other than the precious metal in a reaction product is in the range from 0.001 to 0.1.

A method for producing a catalyst for clarifying an exhaust gas, which comprises preparing an uncrystallized composition containing the element components constituting a perovskite type composite oxide containing a noble metal, admixing the uncrystallized composition with a powder of θ-alumina and/or α-alumina to prepare a mixture, and then subjecting the mixture to a heat treatment. The method allows the perovskite type composite oxide to be carried on the powder of θ-alumina and/or α-alumina, resulting in the securement of satisfactory thermal resistance of the perovskite type composite oxide, which leads to the effective prevention of the lowering of performance capability of the catalyst. A catalyst produced by the method has a perovskite type composite oxide being stable and reduced in the decrease of its specific surface area, and is effectively prevented with respect to the reduction in its catalytic performance capability, even in an oxidation-reduction atmosphere at en elevated temperature, and further can be commercially produced with good efficiency.

A method of producing a perovskite complex oxide containing a noble metal element includes a step of heat-treating a precursor substance containing at least one rare earth element and at least one transition metal element to generate a perovskite complex oxide phase, characterized in that an amorphous substance is used as the precursor substance and the noble metal element is incorporated in the amorphous substance. The perovskite complex oxide obtained by this method contains the noble metal element in its crystal and has a BET specific surface area of greater than 10 m 2 /g.
