Abstract:
Proposed is a thermosetting powder coating composition comprising a mixture of particles reactive towards one another and a catalyst, with a portion of the reactive particles comprising a polymer reacting with epoxy to form ester forming or ether forming groups, while another portion comprises an at least bifunctional cross-linking agent which contains 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl groups, hereinafter referred to as cyclocarbonate groups, and, optionally, epoxy groups, with both the polymer reacting with epoxy to form ester forming and/or ether forming groups and the cross-linking agent being obtained by means of a non-vinylic addition and/or polymerisation process. The catalyst used as ring opener for the cyclocarbonate groups is present in a quantity of 0,01 to 10, preferably 0,1 to 5, parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the mixture of particles reactive towards one another. The quantity of epoxy oxygen present in the cross-linking agent after CO2 unblocking preferably is at least 0,4 wt.%. The reactive polymer preferably is a polymer containing groups reactive towards epoxy such as carboxyl, anhydride and/or hydroxyl groups, with preference being given to polyesters and/or polyurethanes.

The invention also provides for curable blends of these polyester oligomers with other polymers such as polyesters, alkyds, acrylic polymers and the like, which may be further used to prepare curable coating and paint formulations, and also may contain other ingredients such as a cross-linking catalyst, fillers, pigments and the like. When cured, the coatings of this invention exhibit improved physical and chemical properties when compared with cured coatings which do not contain the polyester oligomer component.
Abstract:
The invention relates to lacquers containing a compound of general formula (I) or a mixture of compounds of general formula (I), in which n, m, R?1, R2, R3, R4 and R5¿ have the following meaning: n stands for a number between 2 and 25, preferably a number between 5 and 15, m stands for a number from 0 to 5, X and Y can be identical or different and stand for a functional group, e.g. a hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl or NCO group, R?1 and R4¿ can be identical or different and stand for an alkylene residue, preferably an alkylene residue with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or for an arylene residue, preferably a phenylene residue, R?2 and R3¿ can be identical or different and stand for an alkyl residue, preferably an alkyl residue with 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or for an aryl residue, preferably a phenyl residue, R5 stands for (a) or (b), in which Z stands for X, Y or R2. Compounds of general formula (I) improve in particular the resistance to acids, brushes and weather as well as the water-repellent properties of the lacquer coatings produced with the lacquers.

A curable composition comprises an polysiloxane additive having at least one unit R a SiO (4-a)/2 and at least one unit R b R 1 SiO (3-b)/2 wherein R is a C 1 - 12 hydrocarbon, R 1 is -(CH 2 ) n (OR 2 ) m X where R 2 is C 2-3 alkylene, a is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and b is 0, 1 or 2, and X is OH or -OCOCR 3 =CH 2 where R 3 is H, methyl or ethyl, n is 2 to 5 and m is 8 to 50, provided where X is OH, n is 3 and m is 18. The compositions are useful with polyacrylates as overprint varnishes with improved stability of friction coefficients. Also disclosed is a method for making the additives.
(A) an organic resin, and (B) a silicone compound represented by the average composition formula (1):
(X) a (Y') b (R 1 ) c SiO (4-a-b-c)/2 (1)
wherein X is a particular functional group containing organic group, Y' is a hydrolyzable group or an admixture of a hydrolyzable group and the silanol group, R 1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group, a ranges from 0.05 to 0.90, b 0.12 to 1.88, and c 0.10 to 1.00, a + b + c being in the range of 2.02 to 2.67. The amount of the silicon atoms to which said functional group-containing organic group X is bonded is 5 to 90 mol % based on the entire silicon atoms, and the amount of the T unit of R 1 -SiO 3/2 is 10 to 95 mole % based on the entire siloxane units. This composition is useful to form a coating film excellent in weathering resistance, adhesion, stain resistance, scuffing resistance, water resistance and chemical resistance and therefore suitable for protection of articles exposed outdoors.
