The inlet receives first and second spaced apart streams of input fluid and a third stream of sample fluid containing the cells to be sorted. The first and second streams have respective flow rates relative to the third stream, such that the third stream is constricted, forming a relatively narrow sample stream, so that the cells are oriented parallel to the walls. A detector detects the desired cells and a sorter downstream of the detector, sorts the desired cells from the stream.

The present invention provides deflection plates for use in a flow-type particle sorter that arc resistant to wetting. The deflection plates include a gas-porous, conductive plate. A gas, such as air, is passed through the plate from the outer face (away from the particle flow) towards the inner face (towards the particle flow). The flow of gas prevents condensation on the inner face of the defection plate.

An inlet channel ( 9, 11 ) and an outlet channel ( 8, 10 ) are connected to the envelopment area. By providing a narrowing-down in the cross-section of the channel in immediate extension of the envelopment area ( 3 ), a hydrodynamic focussing of the sample fluid is achieved when a fluid, such as a sample fluid, is introduced into the stub, and a carrier fluid is introduced into the inlet channel. The advantage of the invention is that since it is necessary only to have two fluid inlets, a relatively simple structure can be established, which can be built up in a monolithic manner, e.g. by injection molding.

A calibration method for a flow cytometer with a multichannel detector module. During calibration, the fluorescence intensity data values for the different detector channels are used to calculate normalization factors needed to adjust subsequent data collected by each of the channels. By using a multichannel detector module, the results from the different flow cells can be reliably compared, so that multiple stages of flow cells can be arranged in series along a common flow path, for example to measure the same sample at defined time intervals.

A pump drives fluid from a vented fluid reservoir through a system including a combination of an attenuation tank and one or more orifice. Fluid is pumped into a plenum chamber that supplies fluid in a pulse free flow stream. A pressurized head over the fluid in the plenum chamber allows fluid delivery at a selected pressure. A volume sensor monitors the fluid level within the plenum tank and activates the pump if fluid level falls below a specified level.
