A system (100) includes a long cannula (101), an optical fiber (108), and a multi-spot generator (102). The optical fiber (108) can carry a laser beam to a distal end of the long cannula (101). The multi-spot generator (102) is located within a short cannula (103) at the distal end. The short cannula (103) is disposed within the long cannula (101). The multi-spot generator (103) comprises a faceted optical element (104) and a ball lens (106). The faceted optical element (104) can be formed directly onto or separately from the ball lens (106). The ball lens (106) can be spherical or hemispherical. The ball lens (106) is press-fit in the short cannula (103).

Apparatuses, systems, and method for hydraulic pumps are disclosed. Particularly, hydraulic pumps for ophthalmic surgical procedures are disclosed. Hydraulic pumps within the scope of the disclosure may include an aspiration pump. An example aspiration pump may include first and second hydraulic cylinders and a plurality of one-way valves that are operable to permit fluid flow into a first part of a hydraulic cylinder responsive to movement of a piston within the hydraulic cylinder in a first direction and operable to permit fluid to flow out of the hydraulic cylinder responsive to movement of the piston in a second direction opposite the first direction. The aspiration pump may be attached to a housing of a hand piece, or a portion of the aspiration pump may be received into the housing of the hand piece.

Devices, systems, and methods that utilize at least one charged electrode to impart motion to an optical fiber positioned within an imaging probe by an electrostatic force are provided. In some embodiments, an ophthalmic imaging probe can include a handle; a cannula coupled to the handle; an optical fiber positioned at least partially within the handle and the cannula, the optical fiber configured to receive an imaging light from an imaging light source and guide the imaging light to an optical element positioned within the cannula; and an actuator system configured to impart motion to the optical fiber, the actuator system including an electrode positioned within the cannula and configured to impart motion to the optical fiber by selectively imparting an electric charge to the electrode and/or the electrically conductive layer of the optical fiber.

A surgical instrument (10) for use in vitreoretinal surgeries is described. The surgical instrument includes a pair of pincers (13,14) resiliently biased toward an opened configuration and being movable toward each other into a closed configuration to engage a membrane. Each pincer may include a rounded grasping edge (22). The grasping edges may include a textured surface (50) operable to induce a capillary effect between a membrane and the forceps to promote adhesion therebetween.

There is provided a method for imaging an object, the method comprising the steps of: accommodating a positioning of the object relative to an imaging system. A shape of the object is describable in terms of one or more shape parameters and the method includes creating scan data by determining a coordinate of the object at a set of points along an arc by the imaging system, wherein the coordinate of the object is a Z coordinate of an object layer. The method further includes determining an object shape parameter and an object position parameter based on the scan data by a system control module by extracting an amplitude and a phase of the scan data; and determining a center of the object layer based on the extracted amplitude and phase.
