摘要: Capacitive sensors used to detect force upon a transparency product (18) for detecting and discriminating crash characteristics of a vehicle, as well as capacitive sensors used in conjunction with a conductive panel functioning as an airbag cover and ground plane for the capacitive sensors. The capacitive sensors are made up of electrodes (22 and 22'), of which one may be a conductive coating (28). The capacitive sensor can be arranged upon a substrate and can include a reference sensor. Long term effect of temperature upon sensor output are compensated for with an algorithm comparing constant desired sensor output to low frequency drift due to temperature effects. Moisture upon a transparency product is distinguished from a nearby object due to the capacitance sensed. Sleep detection algorithm detect when a vehicle operator is drowsy. A capacitive sensor array having a nested circle sensor and L-shaped sensors, along with a dummy sensor is used in a sunroof equipped vehicle for sensing occupant head position.

摘要: A passenger sensing system of electrodes (12) in varying configurations. Electrodes (12) can be positioned proximate an airbag door (44), each providing a signal corresponding to occupant proximity, and a comparator for comparing the signals employed to make better decisions than with a single signal. Electrodes (12) may be formed on a dielectric substrate (16) and separated by a grounded area (14) configured to block line-of-sight between each of the electrodes (12). Electrodes (12) may be formed of conductive material attached to dielectric material with a conductive coating on one surface. Electrodes (12) may be embedded within a vehicular trimpiece (72) and adjacent to a conductive material connected to ground, and a DC voltage is applied to one electrode to form a conductive path to a second electrode, the conductive path being formed by moisture. A drive electrode (22) and a receive electrode (26) may be formed integrally with a vehicle window (34).

摘要: A system for detecting impairment of operating ability of transportation vehicle operators due to sleepiness, intoxication or other causes, and for sounding an alarm when operator impairment is found. The invention employs an array of at least three dual electrode capacitive coupling sensors, placed in the headliner above the operator's seat, which sense operator head position and motion. Outputs from the sensors, after suitable processing and amplification, are analyzed by a microprocessor to determine the operator's head position and motion, through triangulation analysis of distances from the operator's head to each sensor. The microprocessor records, tracks and compares the operator head motion data to profiles of normal head motion and impaired head motion, to detect any head motion indicative of operator impairment. When operator impairment is thus determined, the microprocessor activates any of a variety of warning devices, to warn and alert the operator and possibly also operators of other nearby vehicles, that there is a state of operator impairment.
