Methods for treating a subject with a cancer that is characterized by overexpression of HER2 receptor protein using a combination of interleukin-2 (IL-2) or variant thereof and at least one anti-HER2 antibody or fragment thereof are provided. These anti-tumor agents are administered as two separate pharmaceutical compositions, one containing IL-2 (or variant thereof), the other containing at least one anti-HER2 antibody (or fragment thereof), according to a dosing regimen. Administering of these two agents together potentiates the effectiveness of the anti-HER2 antibody alone, resulting in a positive therapeutic response that is improved with respect to that observed with this anti-tumor agent.

A non-imaging optical system for operating on light using broken symmetry reflector surfaces (30). The theoretical upper limit for concentration of direct solar radiation at low latitudes with stationary concentrators is determined from the projected solid angle sampled by the apparent motion of the sun. Based on the fact that the solar radiation is not uniformly distributed within this projected solid angle, we derive higher concentrations which apply when rejecting the lower density radiation. Trough type systems, which have translational symmetry, cannot be ideal stationary concentrators. Efficiency is improved by using broken symmetry for surfaces of the reflector (30) and the light source or concentrator. We note that what applies to concentrators applies equally to reflectors for illumination.

The method includes determining a sensor (or source of data) arrangement associated with monitoring the source of data for a system, activating a method for performing a sequential probability ratio test if the data source includes a single data (sensor) source, activating a second method for performing a regression sequential possibility ratio testing procedure if the arrangement includes a pair of sensors (data sources) with signals which are linearly of non-linearly related; activating a third method for performing a bounded angle ratio test procedure if the sensor arrangement includes multiple sensors and utilizing at least one of the first, second and third methods to accumulate sensor signals and determining the operating state of the system.

Methods for identifying inducers and inhibitors of programmed cell death in a cell-free system are described. The methods exploit the finding that programmed cell death is accompanied by shutdown of cellular protein synthesis and by phosphorylation of eIF-2 alpha and that the dephosphorylation of eIF-2 alpha prevents the shutdown of protein synthesis.

The present invention relates to the use of P-selectin as a targeting agent in radiotherapies for vascular related disease. P-selectin is translocated to the lume of vascular endothelia as a result of radiation. Thus, P-selecting provides a target for receptor-mediated delivery of drugs, including anticancer drugs and drugs for the treatment of vascular disease. However, P-selectin also plays a role in the activation of certain inflammatory cells and, as such, plays a role in radiation-induced inflammation. By interfering with P-selectin induction of inflammation, it is possible to modulate inflammatory responses to radiation therapy.

Methods for protecting a T cell from cell death are described. The methods involve contacting the T cell with an agent which augments the bcl-X L protein level in the T cell such that it is protected from cell death. The invention further pertains to methods for increasing the susceptibility of a T cell to cell death, comprising contacting the T cell with at least one agent which decreases bcl-X L protein level in the T cell. Both in vivo and in vitro methods are described.

p-sulfoxy cinnamic acid isolated from methanolic extracts of the eelgrass Zostera marina having significant antifouling aquatic properties. p-sulfoxy cinnamic acid was synthesized in the laboratory from p-coumaric acid, and antifouling activity was identical to the natural compound in laboratory bioassays. In addition, sulfate esters of other phenolic acids showed similar antifouling activity, suggesting that the sulfate ester was responsible for the antifouling effect.

A breast volume segmentation unit (6) performs volume segmentation on the images obtained by the image acquisition unit (2), and a border removal unit (8) performs breast border removal based on data generated by the volume segmentation unit (6). A lesion enhancement unit (10) performs lesion enhancement for image data generated by the volume segmentation unit (6). A bounding unit (12) determines a bounding sphere based on the image data generated by the lesion enhancement unit (10), and a three-dimensional search volume unit (14) determines a three-dimensional search volume within the image data generated by the bounding unit (12). A suppression unit (16) suppresses surrounding structures in the image data generated by the three-dimensional search unit.
