A variable displacement vane pump which includes an enhanced discharge port (140,152). The enhanced discharge port reduces areas of high pressure in the discharge port (140) which would otherwise occur as the pressurized working fluid reverses its direction of flow to enter the discharge port (140). By reducing the areas of high pressure, the back torque on the pump rotor (108) is reduced and the energy efficiency of the pump is enhanced. In one embodiment, the pivot (120) for the pump control ring (116) is located radially outwardly from a conventional location, to allow for a discharge recess (152) to be formed in the control ring (116), adjacent the discharge port (140), and extending past the pivot (120) to the pump outlet. In a second embodiment, the discharge recess (152) is formed in the control ring (208) around the pivot (120) and a seal (216) is provided on the control ring to inhibit leakage of pressurized working fluid past the control ring. In a third embodiment, a secondary discharge port (312) is provided adjacent the discharge recess (308) formed in the control ring (304) and pressurized working fluid in the discharge recess can exit the discharge recess through the secondary discharge port which is in fluid communication with the pump outlet.

A variable capacity vane pump (20) is provided having a pump control ring (44) that is moveable to alter the capacity of the pump (20). A control chamber (60) is formed between the pump casing (22) and the control ring (44). The control chamber (60) is operable to receive pressurized fluid to create a force to move the control ring (44) to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump (20). A primary return spring (56) acts between the control ring (44) and the casing (22) to bias the control ring (44) towards a position of maximum volumetric capacity. A shaft is coupled at one end to the control ring and a second end of the shaft is positioned a predetermined distance from the casing (22). A secondary return spring (62) is mounted about the shaft and is configured to engage the control ring (44) after the control ring (44) has moved a predetermined amount. The secondary return spring ( 62) biases the control ring (44) towards a position of maximum volumetric capacity. The secondary return spring ( 62) acts against the force of the control chamber ( 60) to establish a second equilibrium pressure.

A novel crescent gear pump and pump rotor set for a crescent gear pump. The rotor set includes an outer rotor with teeth having a composite profile formed over the portion adjacent their root to conform to a circular arc and formed over the portion adjacent their tip to conform to a hypocycloid arc. The unique shape allows for increased volumetric capacity of the rotor set, when compared to trochoidal rotor sets of the same size. Further, operating noise is reduced, as are pulsations in the output of the pump when compared to the same pump with a trochoidal rotor set.

A pair of seal plates are coupled to one of the inner race and the outer race. Each seal plate is positioned proximate to and spaced apart from the other of the inner race and the outer race.
