A process for producing α- and φ-hydroxy fatty acids by treating lanolin fatty acids with boric acid to esterify hydroxy fatty acids contained therein, distilling the reaction product in a vacuum to separate and purify the borates of the hydroxy fatty acids and non-hydroxy fatty acids, hydrolyzing the purified borates, and distilling the hydrolyzate; each of the lanolin fatty acids and esters thereof thus obtained; and cosmetics and external preparations prepared therefrom. The invention process provides light-colored, nearly odorless lanolin fatty acids readily and efficiently on an industrial scale, and the obtained acids can be utilized in the fields of medicines and cosmetics.

The process can provide high-purity cholesterol containing at most 0.3 % of desmosterol and at most 0.5 % of dihydrocholesterol and having a purity of at least 99 % after reduction and crystallization in a yield of 85 % or above.

The invention provides a method of measuring the content of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAH) remaining in lanolin, which comprises separating and concentrating the PAH by gel permeation chromatography using a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and determining the concentrated PAH by HPLC with a fluorometric detector; a method of removing the remaining PAH, which comprises measuring the PAH removal activity of active carbon by the above measuring method to thereby select the optimum adsorption condition and calculate the amount of the active carbon required for lowering the PAH content, and mixing the required amount of active carbon with lanolin to thereby effect specific adsorption of the PAH onto the active carbon; and a method of removing the PAH remaining in wool grease or lanolin by the vacuum distillation of the grease or lanolin under specified conditions either directly or after being treated with a borate and, if necessary, obtaining various lanolin derivatives from the treated wool grease or lanolin.
