A method of imaging thermoplastics, such as acrylic glass, is presented. An image is formed on a transfer sheet or medium, and is heat transferred to the acrylic glass substrate on which the image is to permanently appear. An opaque pass-through coating is applied to one surface of the clear or transparent acrylic glass article. Heat activatable dye forms the image, and the heat activatable dye, when heat activated in close relationship to the opaque pass-through coating, passes through the opaque pass-through coating to the thermoplastic substrate. The image reflects light through the thermoplastic material and is visible through the material and from the side opposite the opaque coating. The opaque pass-through coating layer permanently bonds to the acrylic glass surface.

The present invention is a system and method for digitally customizing or decorating objects typically formed of substrates other than paper. The system includes a computer, color management software, and a full color inkjet printer designed for printing heat activatable ink. The ink comprises heat activatable colorant solids that are printed onto media in the form of an image (3) that may be activated and/or transferred to a subsequent or final substrate by applying heat and intimate contact between the medium (9) and the subsequent or final substrate (8). Control of first level dot gain upon printing and second level dot gain upon heat activation of the colorant provides an image that is of high quality, and even photographic quality, for most substrates that are usable with the system and method of the invention.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for printing heat activatable ink in a non-activated form onto a printing medium, which apparatus comprises: (i) an ink jet printer (6) for printing an non-activated ink image (3) on a printing medium (9) at an operational printing temperature, (ii) a liquid ink formulation for the printer, comprising finely divided solid dye particles in a liquid carrier, in a colloidal form, which dye solids are provided with an emulsifying enforcing agent which acts as a surfactant and surrounds and shields the dye particles to prevent activation at the printing temperature, and which also acts to prevent agglomeration of the dye particles, wherein the emulsifying enforcing agent allows activation of the dye at an activation temperature that is higher than the printing temperature.
