摘要: Petroleum or coal tar pitch-based cellular or porous products having a density of preferably between about 0.1 g/cm3 and about 0.8 g/cm3 are produced by the controlled heating of mesophase carbon materials derived from coal tar or petroleum pitch having a softening point in excess of about 300°C and preferably between about 300 and about 400°C in a 'mold' and under a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The porous product thereby produced, preferably as a net shape or near net shape, can be machined, adhered and otherwise fabricated to produce a wide variety of low cost, low density products.

摘要: A unit load device constructed from fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite materials is described. Individual panels of the unit load device may be customized with composite materials and patterns. The joints are adapted to receive the ends of the panels of the unit load device and may further be customized with fiber reinforced composite materials to strengthen the joint. Some embodiments provide for construction of a unit load device from a variety of fiber reinforcing materials utilizing a matrix of thermoplastic polymers with similar softening temperatures. Each component part within the container was designed and/or created to address the specific needs of the particular part. The unit load devices described herein provide for all composite containers with a significant weight savings from conventional unit load devices.

摘要: A wet filament winding method and apparatus for producing a consolidated metal matrix composite is described. The methods are directed to winding a softened metal infiltrated fiber bundle and layering the resulting softened metal infiltrated fiber bundle onto a rotating mandrel in a prescribed pattern on the surface of the mandrel to form a consolidated metal matrix composite. Upon cooling, the matrix metal solidifies and the resulting consolidated metal matrix composite may be removed from the mandrel. The consolidated metal matrix composites may be produced in a variety of shapes, such as cylinder, a tapered cylinder, a sphere, an ovoid, a cube, a rectangular solid, a polygonal solid, and panels.

摘要: A porous coal-based material (10A) is provided having a density of between about 0.1 gram per cubic centimeter and about 0.6 gram per cubic centimeter produced by the controlled heating of small coal particulate (10) in a 'mold' (12) and under a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The porous product (10A) thereby produced, preferably as a near net shape, can be machined, adhered and otherwise fabricated to produce a wide variety of low cost, low density products, or used in its preformed shape (10A) as a filter, heat or electrical insulator etc. These said porous products (10A), without further treatment exhibit compressive strengths of up to about 6000 psi. Further treatment by carbonization or graphitization of said porous products (10A) yield products that can be used as electrical or heat conductors. Methods for the production of these said coal-based cellular products (10A).

摘要: A method for the manufacture of coal-based carbon foams from a coal particulate starting material that comprises blending from 1 to about 10% by weight of pitch with the coal particulate before foaming. Blends of coal-based particulate with 1 to about 10% by weight of pitch as well as coal-based carbon foams manufactured from such blends are also described. Mold (12) is assembled from three individual pieces carbon or tool steel pieces, sides (12A) and (12B) and bottom (12C), all joined together by bolts (11) and lined with a ceramic glaze or spray applied ceramic lining (13). Cover (16) includes a similar interior ceramic lining 15 and is attached to sides (12A) and (12B) with bolts (11) in the final assembly prior to heating. Gaskets (19) are preferably used to insure a tight fit of cover (16) onto sides (12A) and (12B). Cover (16) is optionally equipped with a sintered vent plug (20) to permit purging of the interior of mold (12) with non-oxidizing gas.
