It is intended to provide a novel protein showing overexpression specifically in an abnormal cell or an abnormal tissue; a diagnostic method and a diagnostic kit for a disease in which the overexpression of a gene encoding the above protein participates; and a screening method and a screening kit for a preventive/remedy for a disease in which the overexpression of a gene encoding the above protein participates. To achieve these objects, there is provided a novel protein showing overexpression specifically in an abnormal cell or an abnormal tissue which is: (a) a protein comprising the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:2, or (b) a protein comprising an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:2 by deletion, substitution or addition of one or more amino acids and showing overexpression specifically in an abnormal cell or an abnormal tissue. The expression level of a gene encoding this protein is employed as an indication in diagnosing a disease. Also, an effect of lowering the expression level of the gene encoding this protein is employed as an indication in screening a preventive/remedy for a disease.

A DNA encoding a novel protein SMAP-1, which has a signal sequence, is successfully isolated by screening a cDNA library originating in human fetal hepatocytes with the use of an originally developed TMT method. The expression characteristics and structural characteristics of SMAP-1 suggest that it is a molecule having an important role in vivo .
