A method is provided for the control of servo hydraulic pressure in an automatic transmission. Servo hydraulic pressure is adapted to engage or release first and second frictional engagement elements arranged in such a relationship that upon shifting from a particular speed stage to another, one of the first and second frictional engagement elements is released while the other is engaged. The servo hydraulic pressure is linearly lowered in a torque phase during a shift so that the servo hydraulic pressure on a side of the frictional engagement element to be released by using as an input the servo hydraulic pressure on a side of the frictional engagement element to be engaged is maintained in conformity with an inversely proportional relationship between engaging pressure and drain pressure.

The control unit includes: application starting pressure detecting means for detecting an application starting pressure at the instant when the application of a clutch is started; initial application pressure setting means for setting an initial application pressure on the basis of the application starting pressure which is detected by the application starting pressure detecting means; and oil pressure adjusting means for adjusting the oil pressure to be fed to a hydraulic servo, when a change is made to a forward running range, and then raising the same gradually. The application starting pressure to be detected by the application starting pressure detecting means takes the value at which the application of the clutch is actually started, so that the initial application pressure can be properly set even if the actual oil pressure to be fed to the hydraulic servo is varied by the dispersion in the urging force of a return spring or by the dispersion in a hydraulic control system.

The control device raises the fluid pressure supply to the hydraulic servo on the basis of predetermined rising characteristics in normal operation. The control system comprises: a neural network; and a mode switch means for switching a teaching mode and an automatic mode. The neural network learns in the teaching mode and neuro-computes to output a gear ratio in the automatic mode. Further comprised are: tolerance error compute means for computing a tolerance error on the basis of at least one of th propriety of a teaching gear ratio, the ambiguity of an input value and the ambiguity of the teaching gear ratio; pattern produce means for producing a learning pattern; and combined load correct means for correcting the coupled loads of the neural network on the basis of the pattern produce means.
