A method for determining the driving resistance of a vehicle by taking into account a value for the vehicle mass is described. Before beginning to drive, the vehicle mass and driving resistance coefficients are estimated with an estimation method by taking into account sensor signals, and an initial value for the driving resistance is calculated from the vehicle mass and the driving resistance coefficients. A corrected value for the driving resistance and the vehicle mass is calculated while driving, based on measured driving-related values, which are measured in chronological succession.

In order to operate a hybrid vehicle, a mode is provided in which adjustment to the electrical remaining range is performed, specifically said remaining range is kept substantially constant. For example, the driver of the vehicle can continuously maintain the currently determined electrical remaining range by activating an activation element, in order to be able to retrieve said electrical remaining range later for purely electric driving, for example in a low emission zone. Adjustment to the electrical remaining range is more appropriate than the previously known adjustment to the charge state of the battery, because the vehicle driver can better plan his journey.

The aim of the invention is to make the post-treatment of exhaust gases more efficient. To this end, a multicylinder internal combustion engine with a catalyst is provided with a control. For heating the catalyst the ignition time (Za, Zb, Zc, Zd, Ze, ...) on one of the cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) is adjusted to 'late' and after a predetermined time interval (tint) the ignition time (Za, Zb, Zc, Zd, Ze, ...) on another cylinder (1, 2, 3, 4) is adjusted to 'late', until finally the adjustment has been performed successively on all cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) of the internal combustion engine. After another predetermined time interval (tint) the adjustment on one of the cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) is restarted until a further heating of the catalyst is no longer necessary.

Each operation is characterised by an input speed and an output speed. A provisional speed profile can be divided into route sections, to each of which one operation out of the defined operations corresponds. The assigned speed profiles may be very complex, and in particular also comprise non-linear sections between the input speed and the output speed; thus a constant travel may be simulated for example by an oscillatory change in the speed. Shutdown phases with a specific frequency and duration can also just as well be contained in an operation. The situational context given by other operations can be taken into consideration when establishing the speed profile.
