The invention provides a hydrogel, having a floating behaviour, wherein 40 to 90% of a solution and/or suspension to be thickened is thickened from the fluid surface and the rest of said solution and/or suspension to be thickened is thickened from the container bottom. Said invention also relates to a method for producing the hydrogel and the use thereof for absorbing blood and/or body fluids, in particular, in hygienic articles, or for thickening aqueous solutions and/or suspensions, in particular, for thickening medical waste.

The invention relates to a method for producing discrete patterns of a sticking coating on a substrate, comprising the following steps: (a) moving continuously or discontinuously the substrate in a conveyor device; (b) flatly applying a low viscosity, polymerizable and/or cross-linkable precursor material of a sticking material through at least one opening substantially configured in the form of a slot of a movable application device on the substrate, whereby a pattern is produced by moving the application device relative to the substrate and (c) the applied precursor material is polymerized and/or crosslinked downstream of the application area.

The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogels and processes to make such hydrogels, in particular hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin and can be used in various personal care products, such as waste-management articles, and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogels described herein are characterized by very low amount of residual starting monomers, impurities, and/or by-products that could be formed during polymerization. Specifically, the hydrogels are made by adding scavengers and/or chain transfer agent prior to polymerization. It has been found, that upon addition of same scavengers the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel differ from the properties of gels polymerized without the scavenger. This is due to the fact, that these specific scavengers act also as chain transfer agents in the radical polymerization.Further studies showed that also chain transfer agents, that are no scanvengers for residual monomer(s), impurities or byproducts influence the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel adhesive.

The invention relates to foams made from water-absorbing, basic polymers, which can be produced by: (I) foaming a cross-linkable aqueous mixture which contains (a) at least one basic polymer whose basic groups are optionally neutralized; (b) at least one cross-linking agent; (c) at least one surface active agent; (d) optionally at least one solubilizer; (e) optionally thickener, foam stabilizers, filling materials, fibers and/or cell nucleator and (f) optionally particle-shaped, water-absorbing acid polymers, wherein a gas that is inert to radicals is dissolved for foaming purposes in the cross-linkable, aqueous mixture at a pressure ranging from 2 to 400 bar, which is then relieved at atmospheric pressure or wherein foaming occurs by dispersing fine bubbles of a gas that is inert to radicals, and (II) crosslinking the foamed mixture by forming a foamy hydrogel and optionally regulating the water content of the foamy polymer to 1 to 60 percent by weight. The invention further relates to a method for the production of foams by implementing the above-mentioned measures (I and II) and to the utilization of the resulting foams in hygiene articles for the absorption of body fluids, in dressing materials to cover wounds, as sealing materials, packaging material, soil conditioners, soil substitutes, mud drainage, the absorption of acid aqueous wastes, for thickening aqueous paints in the disposal of paint residues, dehydrating water-containing oils or hydrocarbons or as material for filters in ventilation systems.
