The poly- or monomethylol alkanal of general formula (II) used in the reaction has an overall content of metal ions of groups 3 to 14 of the periodic table of up to 5 ppm. The method is used especially for producing dimethylol allkanoic acids from the corresponding dimethylol alkanals, especially for producing dimethylol butanal or dimethylol propanal.

The inventive method is characterized in that trialkylammonium formate is decomposed at an increased temperature on a catalyst which is placed on a titanium dioxide support and contains ruthenium in the presence of a gas containing hydrogen. Said method makes it possible to separate the trialkylammonium formate from methylolalkanes produced according to the organic Cannizzaro method and the hydration method.
