The invention relates to a method for finishing absorbent materials by treatment with at least one aqueous liquor, comprising at least one organic polymer, at least one organic or inorganic solid in particulate form and at least one emulsifier, selected from emulsifiers of general formulas (I) and (II), whereby the variables are as follows: R1 = C6-C40 alkyl, R2 independently = H or methyl, m, n independently = a whole number from 0 to 10, R3 independently = C6-C20 alkyl and M = alkali metal or ammonium.
