    Abstract: This infrared thermometer (1) includes: a main unit (1R) incorporating an infrared sensor (3); a proximity sensor (100) for detecting that the main unit (1R) has been positioned in proximity to a human body; and a controller (83) which calculates body temperature based on quantity of infrared from the infrared sensor (3) when the proximity sensor (100) has detected positioning of the main unit (1R) in proximity to a human body. The proximity sensor (100) includes a ground electrode (5), and a plurality of segmented electrodes (7, 7B, 7C, 7D) arranged about the perimeter of the ground electrode (5). The controller (83) measures electrostatic capacitance between the ground electrode (5) and the segmented electrodes (7, 7B, 7C, 7D) when positioned in proximity to a human body, and measures the distance between the main unit (1R) and the human body, to thereby detect tilt of the main unit (1R) with respect to the human body.
