摘要: The present invention describes an apparatus (1) for detecting biological activities in a large number of blood culture containers (20). The containers are placed in a plurality of wells (35) arranged in concentric rows (36, 37, 38) on a turntable that is rotated about a central axis. Each well is designed to receive and hold one of a plurality of sealable containers inserted base first, with each container having optical sensing means for sensing microorganisms therein and a bar code pattern attached thereto for identification purposes. Each well has an opening (39) in its base (40) to allow a sensor station to monitor a fluorescence chemical sensor (27) in each container to determine whether there is microorganism growth within the container. Prior to inserting each container into a well on the turntable, a culture medium and blood specimen are introduced into the container and the bar code is scanned to identify the container. As the containers are rotated on the turntable they are exposed to conditions enabling a variety of metabolic, physical, and chemical changes to take place in the presence of microorganisms within the specimen. The apparatus also includes a door on the front that opens and permits the turntable to be loaded and unloaded from the front of the apparatus with simultaneous access to all containers.

摘要: In needle-based dispensing systems, the target amount of liquid to be dispensed is in many cases very well controlled. However, the amount of liquid that is actually reaching the receiving well may show a discrepancy, because part of the liquid leaving the inner needle space remains on the outer surface of the dispense needle, and so a small amount of liquid is “lost” in the dispensing act. A sensor arrangement according to the present invention is suitable for detecting the presence of any liquid from the aspiration reservoir that is left behind on the outside of the dispense needle, before the dispense step is actually started. The “lost” volume can also be measured very accurately by inserting the tip of a dispense needle into a hollow metallic cylinder, forming a capacitor, whereby the capacitance value depends on the volume of the “lost” dispense volume.

摘要: A fluorescence detector method and apparatus for detecting biological activities in a fluid specimen, such as blood, urine or sputum, where the specimen and a culture medium are introduced into sealable containers and exposed to conditions enabling a variety of metabolic, physical, and chemical changes to take place in the presence of microorganisms in the sample. In operation, the detector method and apparatus illuminate a chemical sensor material in the sealable container with excitation light which is turned on and off periodically according to a symmetric square wave, split the measured fluorescence photocurrent into two components that represent different harmonics of the symmetric square wave signal, measure the amplitudes of the two components, generate the ratio of the two components, and use that ratio as the sensor output signal to indicate biological activity.

摘要: An apparatus and method for rapidly distinguishing positive blood cultures from negative bloodcultures in sealable containers, and for determining the combination of blood volume and hematocrit in a sealable container. The apparatus comprises an optical source for illuminating the culture with a light beam under an oblique angle to generate an asymmetric spatial distribution of backscattered light, which is imaged onto an imaging detector connected to a data analyzer.
