摘要: A structural frame (12) for dissipating heat from an electronic device (10) is provided. The structural frame (12), to which an electronic circuit board (14) containing a heat generating electronic component (16) is mounted, is injection molded from a thermally conductive, net-shape moldable polymer composition. The electronic component (16) that is within the device (10) is in thermal communication with the structural frame (12), so that the heat generated within the device (10) is transferred to the frame (14) and dissipated from the heat-generating device (10). An outer case (22) may be mounted to the frame (12) to finish the device (10) or the frame (12) may serve as all or a part of the outer device case (22) as well. In addition, the structural frame (12) has characteristics that may be engineered and used to shield the device (10) from electromagnetic interference.

摘要: A thermally conductive lamp reflector is provided that dissipates heat from a light source within the reflector. The reflector assembly includes a shell having a metallized layer on its surface. The shell is made from a composition including about 30% to about 80% by volume of a base polymer matrix and about 20% to about 70% by volume of a thermally conductive filler material. The reflector has a thermal conductivity of greater than 3 W/m° K and preferably greater than 22 W/m° K. The reflectors can be used in automotive headlamps, flashlights, and other lighting fixtures. A method of forming the lamp reflector is also provided.

摘要: A method is provided for forming a net shape molded component that includes an integral metallized coating (12) or layer on the exterior surface thereof . The method includes injecting a carefully matched mixture of a molten polymer (10) resin and a molten metallic alloy (12) into a mold cavity (20) under pressure. Due to the differential in material viscosities, the metal (12) tends to migrate to the outer surface (22) of the molded part when placed under pressure, ultimately creating a net shape molded part (34) having a polymer core (10) with a metallic layer (12) at the exterior surfaces thereof . Further, the present invention provides for the compounding of a feedstock (40) suitable for use in conjunction with the method described above.

The thermally conductive composition includes a polymer base matrix of, by volume, between 30 and 60 percent. A first thermally conductive filler, by volume, between 25 and 60 percent is provided in the composition that has a relatively high aspect ratio of at least 10:1. Also in the composition mixture is a second thermally conductive filler, by volume, between 10 and 25 percent that has a relatively low aspect ratio of 5:1 or less.

摘要: A method of molding a reinforced article (100) for optimizing heat transfer, electrical conductivity and/or structural integrity is provided. A mold assembly is first provided which is capable of forming an article (100) of a desired configuration, which may include a base (112) and upstanding fins (114). The desired positioning of the filler within the molded article (100) is determined according to the thermal, electrical or structural needs of the article (100). An input gate (116) and output gate vent (118) is formed in the mold assembly to insure positioning of the filler as desired. Polymer, loaded with reinforced filler, is introduced into the mold assembly via the input gate (116). Polymer is positioned in the mold assembly with the reinforcing filler being substantially parallel and aligned with the flow path. A bottom surface (120) of base (112) is provided with flush thermal communication with a heat generating device which may be positioned in the area designated (122).

The trays can be used for fluorescent immunoassays. The fluorescence level of the polymer composition is sufficiently low such that it does not interfere with the fluorescent immunoassay process. The invention also includes methods for making the bioassay trays.
