摘要: Electro-optical sensing of form type and other defects on surfaces such as sheet metal or plastic panels. Method and apparatus are disclosed for detection and quantification of defects such as dents, creases, low spots, flat spots, etc. which are a result of the manufacturing, material handling and assembly process. In one embodiment (Fig. 3) the sensing apparatus includes a laser (201) for illuminating an area (220) of the surface to be inspected. A retroreflective member (203) is positioned relative to the surface so that light reflected from the surface area (220) is retroreflected back to the surface to be re-reflected therefrom. A lens (210) images the returning light via a beam splitter (213) onto a detector (215).

摘要: Electro-optical sensing of form, type and other defects on surfaces such as sheet metal or plastic panels. A retroreflective screen (15) is positioned relative to the surface (11) so that light reflected from the surface (11) is retroreflected back to the surface (11) to be reflected therefrom. A lens (21) images the returning light onto a detector (22).

摘要: "Reconfigurable Tactile Control Displays" are provided which are particularly suited for applications such as automobile instrument panels where large displays and controls are desirable to provide a wide range of information, with minimal driver distraction and the safe input of data to vehicle subsystems or for communication based activities. Preferred embodiments utilize rear projection displays with electro-optically sensed physical controls and touch commands and offer, at low cost, a maximum of reconfigurability to different car lines, drivers, and tasks. Also disclosed are novel implementations for other applications such as control of appliances, heating and other household functions which may share common control and display presentation with those used in the vehicle.

摘要: A method and apparatus is disclosed for 'intelligent' control (410) of production processes such as machining, casting, heat treating and welding. The key enabler of such control is of an electro-optical (25, 95, 305, 405) or other suitable sensor type. The sensor is generally of non contact type, capable of rapidly and accurately acquiring data from parts and the tools used to produce the parts in a production 'in-process' environment. Systems are disclosed to control not only the instant operation, but those processes connected therewith, both upstream and downstream. Data bases are generated and knowledge bases are used. Application of the invention can improve quality and productivity, and allow the production of parts which have unusual or individual material characteristics (1000-1008).

In one embodiment the medium (15) whose deviation in index of refraction is to be determined is located between a point light source (10) and retroreflective screen (20). A camera (30) is focused to make the effect visible.
