摘要:
A user-removable optical data storage system is provided. A rotatable first-surface medium (114) is enveloped in a cartridge (124, 126). The cartridge provides relatively large data capacity such as about 0.25 Gbytes or more despite a relatively small size such as about 35 mm X 35 mm X 3 mm. Preferably the cartridge substantially seals the data surfaces of the medium when the cartridge is withdrawn from a drive and at least a portion of a surface is automatically exposed to the objective of an optics arm when the cartridge is inserted in the drive. Tracking involves rotating an optic arm (236) about an axis parallel to the disk rotation axis (237). Focus can involve pivoting the arm about an axis parallel to the disk surface.
摘要:
An optical medium (112) uses a single structure or format (such as identical materials, layers and the like) for both a region for holding information content-mastered data and a writeable area (118, 126, 128). In one aspect, a writeable region (118, 128) of a medium (112) with information content-mastered data is used in connection with paying, collecting or accounting for usage or royalties for proprietary intellectual property embodied in or associated with the content. In one embodiment, a key permitting access to some or all of the content, preferably when combined with a disk serial number, is stored in the writeable area (118, 128), which is preferably user-inaccessible.
摘要:
Media which stores protected content, is distributed (114) to users (116) without need for payment at the time of the media distribution. Payment can be performed at a later time in response to which content may be enabled (118), and/or users may selectively pay for, and receive enablement of, content such that only portions of content on given media may be accessible at a given time. Following the first enablement of content, access rights may be expanded or otherwise changed, e.g., in response to a second payment.

An optical medium (112) uses a single structure or format for both master data (126) and writeable area (128). In one aspect, writeable area (128) is used in connection with paying, collecting or accounting for usage or royalties for proprietary intellectual property embodied in or associated with the content. In another aspect, writeable area can be used for storing later-written information (228) such as annotations, highlighting, reordering, remixing, modifications, supplements, collections, additions, bookmarks, cross references, hypertext or hyperlinks and the like, annotations and similar materials can be associated by the user with particular portions or content of the mastered data (126).
