Substantially random ethylene copolymers containing at least 3.0 mole percent of geminally disubstituted olefin monomers are described. The geminally disubstituted olefin monomers can be represented by the generic formula R1 = R2(R3)(R4), where R1 is CH2, R2 is C, and R3 and R4 are, independently, essentially linear hydrocarbyl groups having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, or more, and containing one carbon atom bound directly to R2. The copolymers can be prepared by coordination polymerization by means of contacting at least one geminally disubstituted olefin monomer and ethylene, optionally with one or more other coordination polymerizable monomers, with a catalyst system comprising a monocyclopentadienyl, heteroatom-containing Group 4 transition metal catalyst component.

This invention relates to a process for polymerizing olefins at high pressures in a polymerization medium at high temperature utilizing an ionic olefin polymerization catalyst derived from the reaction of a cyclopentadienyl-containing transition metal compound having a hydrolyzable alkyl or hydride ligand with an ion exchange activator. The ionic catalyst system has been found to be highly active at temperatures of 160 °C or greater, to provide a process capable of producing polymer products of desired chemical and physical properties at high production rates.

Preferred embodiments include a late transition metal catalyst system comprising a Group 9, 10, or 11 metal complex stabilized by a bidentate ligand structure immobilized on a solid porous metal or metalloid oxide particle support, particularly those comprising silica. The gas phase polymerization process for olefin monomers comprises contacting one or more olefins with these catalyst systems under gas phase polymerization conditions.
