The system includes means for detecting the actual value of the rotation speed of the engine (1) and means for detecting an actual value of the power supplied by the generator system (3). The control (19) comprises rotation speed regulators (33), which maintain the actual rotation speed at a predetermined setting, and power regulators (37) which maintain the actual electric power at a predetermined setting. To the control (19) is allocated a data store (31) in which characteristic data for combinations of data for the power setting and data for the rotation speed setting and/or data for regulating the at least one motor element (27) are stored. Both with the generator arrangement (3) and with the engine (1) on overrun, depending on the current from the generator arrangement, the control (19) detects the torque cycle depending on the crankshaft angle and, depending on the rotation speed cycle, diagnoses operating faults and/or the state of the motor.

An electronic control (20) controls the power distributor (8) depending on a running signal in accordance with boundary conditions, e.g. the lowest possible specific fuel consumption. A temporary high power requirement can be covered by the accumulator (22). During more sustained increased power consumption, the internal combustion engine, which is run when possible in a mode consuming little fuel, is speeded up to cover the increased power requirement. At the maximum power of the internal combustion engine, the power stored in the accumulator (22) can be used for additional thrust.

By measuring the wheel pressure of the individual driven wheels, the road grip limits of the wheels may be detected and the electric motors may be controlled in order to improve traction.

In order to detect a critical driving torque or an information representing the coefficient of friction at the road adhesion threshold for a vehicle having several driven wheels (5), at least two of the driven wheels (5) are associated to torque controlling means (13) that allow the ratio between the driving torques of both driven wheels (5) to be varied. Torque detecting means generate a torque signal that corresponds to the strength of at least the highest driving torque among those of both driven wheels (5). Wheel slip detecting means (19) that detect the increase in wheel slip of the wheel (5) with the highest driving torque beyond a predetermined slip threshold are associated to the driven wheels (5). The information on the coefficient of friction is generated depending on the strength of the detected driving torque of the wheel (5) whose slip exceeds the slip threshold. In order to determine the information on the coefficient of friction, the distribution of the driving torques of front axle (7) and rear axle (9) is periodically and alternatively increased.
