The material is in at least one of a path of the magnetic field (8), a path of the electric current (11) and means for generating the magnetic field. Variation of the electric property of the material allows one of the magnetic field (8) and the electric current (11) to be automatically increased or decreased in intensity in response to the temperature of the liquid metal (7), so that the force (F, P) acting on the liquid metal flow (7) is controlled.

A sensor for monitoring the interior of a sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor comprises a pair of symmetrical magnetic cores (33, 33', 112,112'), a magnetrostrictive or piezoelectric vibrator element (30, 100) bonded to one of the cores, a primary coil (31) and a plurality of secondary coils (32) surrounding the magnetic cores, and a container enclosing the above members. The primary coil (31) applied with an exciting alternating current generates an acoustic signal voltage indicative of sound, if any, originated in the interior of the reactor. The magnetic flux produced by the exciting current is influenced by the temperature and flow velocity of sodium flowing around the sensor, and corresponding voltage signals resulting from the changed magnetic flux are induced in the secondary coils.

The phosphor may be produced by firing raw materials in a strong sulfurizing atmosphere. These phosphors have high efficiencies and can be tuned to a desired hue. A phosphor of high luminous intensity consists of an alkaline-earth metal sulfide which is activated with at least one element selected from the lanthanides, Mn, Cu, Ag, Pb and Au and is doped with phosphorus at a concentration in the range 100 p.p.m. to 10,000 p.p.m. and a halogen element. This phosphor when it contains Ba alone or both Ba and Mg at a concentration of 50 p.p.m. to 10,000 p.p.m. in the alkaline-earth metal sulfide has especially good luminous intensity.
