According to said method, the vehicle bodies or household appliances are cleaned, passivated and coated. The invention is characterised in that for the purpose of passivation, the vehicle bodies or household appliances are brought into contact with an aqueous solution which has a pH-value of 1 to 12 and which contains such a quantity of complex fluorides of Ti, Zr, Hf, Si and/or B that the content of Ti, Zr, Hf, Si and/or B is 20 to 500 mg/l, and 50 to 2000 mg/l organic polymers, the composition of the aqueous solution being selected with a view to preventing the formation of a crystalline phosphate layer containing zinc on the metallic surface.

The invention relates to an aqueous solution for producing a conversion coating on metal surfaces. The solution has a pH value of 1.5 to 6 and contains complex fluorides of Ti, Zr, Hf, Si and/or B in quantities corresponding to a Ti, Zr, Hf, Si and/or B content of 20 to 500 mg/l; and 0.1 to 2 g/l adhesion-promoting coating additives.
