The invention relates to a coating material for forming a vitreous coating film, characterized by comprising compounds represented by the following general formule (1) to (3): R pSi(OR )4-p (1), R (OSi(OR )2)qOR (2), M(OR )r (3) wherein R is a polymerizable organic group; R is an alkyl having up to four carbon atoms; R is an alkyl having up to six carbon atoms; p is an integer of 1 to 3; q is an integer of 1 to 10; M is a metal ion having a valence of 3 or 4; and r is an integer of 3 or 4 according to the valence of M, provided when each compound contains more than one group of R , R , or R , then these may be the same or different. This material forms a vitreous coating film which has sufficient flexibility, is excellent in the control of film thickness in a region of the order of micrometer, and rapidly cures to give a cured film having high adhesion to the substrate and excellent resistance to organic solvents. The invention also relates to a coating method using said material and to a coater.
