The object is to stabilize the combustion while improving the fuel efficiency relying upon the injection during the compression stroke of the cylinder fuel injection type internal combustion engine and to improve performance for cleaning the exhaust gases. The device comprises a fuel injection valve (5) for directly injecting fuel into a combustion chamber (4) of the internal combustion engine, a spark plug (7) provided in the combustion chamber (4), an EGR valve (13) provided in an EGR passage (12), a fuel injection timing control means (21) for controlling the fuel injection timing control means (21) for controlling the fuel injection timing of the fuel injection valve (5) based on a preset target fuel injection timing, an ignition timing control means (22) for controlling the ignition timing of the spark plug (7) based on a preset target ignition timing, an exhaust gas recirculating rate control means (25) for controlling the opening of the EGR valve (13) based upon a preset target EGR percentage, and a misfire determining means for detecting a change in the combustion. When a change in the combustion is detected, the target fuel injection timing, target ignition timing and target EGR percentage are retarded or decreased.

A cylinder injection type internal combustion engine wherein a recessed portion (22A) is formed in an upper surface of a piston (22) so as to produce and develop a vertical vortex current in which intake gas that is introduced into a combustion chamber (27) of the engine is directed from a lower side (21A) of a cylinder head (21) of the engine to the upper surface of the piston (22) and then from the upper surface of the piston (22) to the lower side (21A) of the cylinder head, and wherein a corner on an outlet side of the recessed portion (22A) where the vertical vortex current exits, is formed more bluntly than a corner of the recessed portion (22A) where the vertical eddy current enters, whereby fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber (27). This cylinder injection type internal combustion engine can, in particular, stably burn thin fuel-air mixture in a stratified fashion on thereby reduce fuel consumption and, even in burning fuel-air mixture richer than the thin fuel-air mixture, it can ensure a high output, whereby it is possible to provide an internal combustion engine with high efficiency.
