According to such configuration, even in a state circulation of the fluid may stop in the circulation channel (60A), the fluid can be heated while the fluid is circulated through the bypass channel (66), and therefore the entire circulation channel (60A) can be efficiently preheated. Moreover, since retrofitting to the existing circulation channel (60A) is possible, sound versatility can be exerted.

In a transition state in which the load acting on an engine increases such as at the time of acceleration (S 14: YES), an instruction signal which instructs increasing of an EGR amount is transmitted to an ECU (S18). Further, electric current is supplied to a heat generation resistor of a glow plug through resistance PI control (S20), whereby the temperature of the heat generation resistor is stably maintained at a target temperature, and stability of combustion is enhanced. Thus, even at the time of acceleration, generation of NO x can be suppressed effectively by increasing the EGR amount without lowering the engine output.

According to the invention the first heating element (19a) is configured to defrost water which is located in the water tank (5) and/or in the intake line (7) and is frozen. Furthermore the conveying element (3) is configured according to the invention to convey the defrosted water in the intake line (7) back into the water tank (5) via the return line (13). A further feature of the invention relates to an internal combustion engine having a water injection device (1) according to the invention and to a method for operating the water injection device (1).

In the case of performing a main injection, and a sub-injection that injects a minute amount of fuel in a region (i) in Fig. 3, a check is conducted to determine whether or not the minute amount of fuel is injected accurately. In a specific cycle at a time of cold starting when catalyst warm-up control is performed, the main injection is omitted and a checking injection corresponding to a sub-injection is performed. Injection conditions of the in-cylinder injection valve 28 are made uniform between the checking injection and the sub-injection. A fuel amount that is actually injected from the in-cylinder injection valve 28 in the specific cycle is calculated based on the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas discharged from the engine 10 and an in-cylinder air amount, and is compared with a fuel amount that theoretically should be injected from the in-cylinder injection valve 28.
