A light-diffusible methacrylic resin composed of 80 to 99.9% by weight of a polymer (A) forming a continuous phase and 20 to 0.1 % by weight of a polymer (B) forming a dispersed phase is disclosed. Polymer (A) is a polymer prepared from methyl methacrylate by itself or a polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture containing at least 80% by weight of methyl methacrylate; polymer (B) is a polymer prepared from at least one polymerizable unsaturated monomer represented by the general formula [I]: in which R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R 2 is a hydrocarbon radical having at least 2 carbon atoms or a derivative thereof. Alternatively polymer (B) may be a polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture containing at least 50% by weight of at least one polymerizable unsaturated monomer represented by the general formula [I]. A methacrylic resin having reduced water absorption properties is produced by polymerizing a mixture consisting of (A) 50 to 85% by weight of a methyl methacrylate, (B) 15 to 50 by weight of a cyclohexyl methacrylate and (C) 0 to 30% by weight of the other copolymerizable with said monomer (A) and (B), or partially polymerized product thereof. The methacrylic resin can suitably be used to various optical equipments, information recording substrates and so on.

A novel methacrylic resin shaped article is made of novel compositions comprising (A) 80 to 99.9% by weight of methyl methacrylate polymer or copolymer, which forms continuous phase, and (B) 0.1 to 20% by weight of a polymer obtained from at least one unsaturated monomer of the general formula wherein R 1 is H or methyl group and R 2 is a hydrocarbon radical of at least two carbon atoms, a derivative or monomer mixture thereof, the respective refractive indexes (n A ) and (n B ) of said (A) and (B) polymers satisfying the relation of 0.998 s n B /n A ≤ 1.002. The above shaped article has a latent mat surface, which therefore may be converted to a mat surface merely by means of stretching at a temperature above heat distortion temperature.

Coating compositions comprising a polyfunctional monomer of a mono or polypentaerythritol poly(meth)acrylate, a bifunctional (meth)acrylate having specific monomer structure, an additional (meth)acrylate containing not more than 2 (meth)acryloyloxy groups, a phosphoric acid ester and an ethanolamine all blended together in a suitable organic solvent system together with a photosensitizer are disclosed. The compositions provide a scratch-resistant, hard cross-linked film surface that is dyeable and resists static and fogging to a synthetic resin article, such as polymethyl methacrylate, to which they are applied.
