There is provided, in one aspect of the present description, a method of controlling a spark ignited internal combustion engine 1 having a fuel injector 53 which injects fuel directly into its combustion chamber 17. The method comprises stopping the fuel injection if a desired torque for the engine 1 is a predetermined torque or less and a speed of the engine 1 is a predetermined speed or greater. The method comprises resuming the fuel injection by injecting a first amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber 17 during a negative pressure period and injecting a second amount of the fuel into the combustion chamber 17 during an intake period. The method further includes resuming the fuel injection by injecting a third amount of the fuel directly into the combustion chamber 17 during the negative pressure period and injecting a fourth amount of the fuel into the combustion chamber 17 during the intake period.

A rich mixture having a low air-fuel ratio is combusted in a cylinder which is on a compression stroke at engine stop to produce a torque acting on an engine in a reverse running direction thereof and a mixture produced in a cylinder which is on an expansion stroke at engine stop is combusted after the mixture has been sufficiently compressed as a result of reverse running motion of the engine. Subsequently, an additional quantity of fuel is injected into the cylinder which was initially on the compression stroke when gas in this cylinder has been compressed due to the reverse running motion of the engine, so that a compressive reaction force exerted by the same cylinder decreases due to a cooling effect produced by absorption of latent heat by evaporation of the injected fuel.

An engine starting system includes an ECU for controlling engine restart operation. The ECU produces initial combustion (1) in a cylinder which is initially on a compression stroke at engine stop to force a piston in the cylinder downward and a piston in a cylinder which is initially on an expansion stroke upward, causing a pressure increase in the cylinder which was initially on the expansion stroke. Fuel is injected into the cylinder which was initially on the expansion stroke and a resultant mixture is ignited and combusted (2). Air necessary for succeeding combustion in the cylinder initially on the compression stroke is left unused after the initial combustion performed therein at engine stop, fuel is supplied into the cylinder after the initial combustion, and second combustion (3) in the cylinder initially on the compression stroke is produced when the piston in it now ascending passes its compression stroke top dead center.

Disclosed is an engine starting system for a vehicle, which comprises stop/restart control means operable, in response to satisfaction of a automatic engine stop condition when a automatic transmission mechanism is in a drive mode (D) (t0), to switch the automatic transmission mechanism from the drive mode (D) to a neutral mode (N) in an initial stage of an automatic engine stop control. In conjunction with the switching, the stop/restart control means is operable, in an event where an engine speed Ne is greater, by a given value or more, than a turbine speed Nt, to perform a buffering control (for example, D3 → D2 shift) configured to reduce transient vehicle vibrations to be caused by the switching, and, after the buffering control, to interrupt fuel supply for maintaining engine operation (t2). The engine starting system of the present invention can switch the automatic transmission mechanism from the drive mode to the neutral mode through the automatic engine stop control to achieve enhanced restart performance while reducing transient vehicle vibrations to be caused by the switching.
