A signal amplitude shaping circuit is interposed between a signal source and a signal input terminal of a frequency modulation circuit of a typical voice radio transmitter or transceiver unit. The amplitude shaping circuit includes a high-impedance sampling circuit which senses the steady state bias voltage at the signal input terminal during periods when no data are being transmitted. Upon receipt of a transmit-enable signal, the most recently sensed bias voltage is stored and positive and negative offset voltages are generated with respect to the stored voltage. One of the offset voltages is adjusted as a precisely determined voltage with respect to the stored voltage. The other of the offset voltages is generated by inverting the first, adjusted voltage, such that the two offset voltages are offset by equal values in opposite directions. An analog switch is adapted to receive a sequence of digital signals and to apply the positive and negative offset voltages to the signal input terminal in a sequence corresponding to the binary signal sequence of the received data signals.

A digital data communication system enables host computer to communicate with a great number of data terminals having specified functions. Communication from the host computer proceeds through a medium or long distance, high power transceiver and through a multiplex system to one of a number of portable communication devices. The communication devices preferably contain internal power supplies, such as rechargeable NiCad battery packs. The devices may be carried on a person's belt, or may be mounted within or on a service vehicle, for example, a forklift truck for use in warehouse operations or a merchandise delivery route vehicle. The communication devices are adapted to function as communication relay devices between the host computer and selected ones of the data terminals. Each communication device includes a first type, low power transceiver to communicate within a first channel and at a low power transmission level with a selected number of the data terminals which also feature such first type transceivers. Each communication device further includes a high power transceiver to communicate within a second channel with the transceiver of the host computer. A microprocessor operated address controller allows the communication device to control low power communication among the data terminals by receiving and re-transmitting locally directed communications. The controller and the controlling protocol further relays data messages between the low power communication level and host computer. In operation the device receives data messages on one of the transceivers and transmits them on the other. The communication device further may contain sufficient memory capacity to permit periodic batch type data transmission between the host computer and the communication device. The ability to switch from a high power, high precision and high cost transmission system to a low power, low precision and low cost transmission system at the level at which a great number of data terminal devices are used provides system flexibility at a reasonable cost.

A hierarchical communication system, arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. Copies of data, program code and processing resources are migrated from their source toward requesting destinations based on request frequency, communication link costs and available local storage and/or processing resources. Each appropriately configured network device acts as an active participant in network migration. In addition, portable two-dimensional (2-D) code reading terminals are configured to wirelessly communicate compressed 2-D images toward stationary access servers that identify the code image through decoding and through comparison with a database of images that have previously been decoded and stored.

The reader reads at least one full line of indicia and may comprise a laser bar code scanner or a flash type image reader. Preferably the reader has uniform resolution in orthogonal directions in the field of view so that an area image can be read at any arbitrary angular orientation and re-oriented as a stored digital image to a normalized orientation before decoding. The user interface may lie in a first longitudinally extended layer and the peripheral module may lie in a second longitudinally extended adjoining layer. In normal reading disposition of the automatic reader, the user interface may be close to its normal orientation for user interaction therewith to provide for smooth transitions between reading and user interaction operations. A hand grip portion preferably underlies the user interface for comfortable support thereof during manual actuations. The peripheral module and hand grip portion may be used entirely separately from the user interface and may have a wireless link with the user interface. The user interface may comprise a digitizer/display with resolution for accurately digitizing and displaying a person's signature. Signatures may also be digitized via an optical full image reader for immediate verification.

A transceiver apparatus (110) for creating a wireless personal local area network between a computer terminal (7) and one or more peripheral devices (9, 13, 23). A separate transceiver (110) is connected to the computer terminal (7) and to each peripheral device (9, 13, 23). The transceivers (110) can be connected to the terminal (7) or the peripheral devices (9, 13, 23) either internally or externally. A low power radio (112) is used to communicate information between the computer terminal (7) and the peripheral devices (9, 13, 23). Different transceivers (110) can be used for modifying the carrier frequency and power of the local area network. A microprocessor (120) is located inside each transceiver (110) and controls the information flow of the transceiver including the communication protocol which allows each device (7, 9, 13, 23) to know if other devices (7, 9, 13, 23) are communicating, which devices (7, 9, 13, 23) are being communicated to, and selectively address the peripheral devices (9, 13, 23). An Idle Sense communication protocol is used for information transfer between the computer terminal (7) and the peripheral devices (9, 13, 23).
