An ink composition is disclosed which can realize an image possessing excellent rubbing/scratch resistance and color reproduction in color ink jet recording and has advantages as a superpenetrating ink composition. The ink composition comprises at least a specific colorant, water, a water-soluble dispersant, and a penetrant, wherein the penetrant is 0.1 to 5% by weight of an acetylene glycol compound and the water-soluble dispersant is a water-soluble styrene/(meth)acrylic acid resin in an amount of 0.1 to 1 part by weight on a solid basis based on the pigment. An ink set capable of forming an excellent color image in color ink jet recording is also disclosed which comprises an orange ink composition and/or a green ink composition in combination with a yellow ink composition, a magenta ink composition, and a cyan ink composition that have hitherto been used in the color ink jet recording. The ink set consists essentially of three ink compositions, a yellow ink composition, a magenta ink composition, and a cyan ink composition, and, in addition, an orange ink composition and/or a green ink composition.

The surface of ink flow passage of this invention is high in hydrophilic properties and enables quick removal of bubbles developing in the flow passage. It is an object of the invention to provide a photocurable ink composition excellent in curability, while keeping low viscosity and storage stability. Another object of the invention is to provide an ink jet recording method and an ink jet recording apparatus which can provide a high image quality image. The photocurable ink composition according to the invention comprises at least one of an allyl group-containing compound and an N-vinyl compound as a polymerizable compound and at least one of thioxanthone and an amine as a polymerization accelerator. The ink jet recording method and ink jet recording apparatus according to the invention use the above-mentioned photocurable ink composition, and is constituted so as to initiate light irradiation 0.1 to 20 s after ejection of this ink composition from a head onto a recording medium.

The present invention provides an ink jet recording method, in which a pigment ink composition and a clear ink composition containing a resin component are discharged to record information on a recording medium, wherein the discharge amount of the pigment ink composition and/or the discharge amount of the clear ink composition is adjusted so that the gloss will be substantially uniform over the entire recording surface of the recording medium after recording.

The first liquid comprises a reactant capable of breaking dispersion of a colorant and the like in an ink composition to agglomerate the colorant component. It comprises an alkali-soluble copolymer, water, a colorant, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of a wax, viscosity modifier, and wetting agent, wherein the alkali-soluble copolymer is a copolymer having an acid value of 40 or lower obtained by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer with other monomer copolymerizable therewith in the presence of either a water-soluble polymer having an alcoholic hydroxy group or a copolymerizable surfactant, and the pH of the composition has been regulated with an inorganic base so as to impart solubility in water. With the ink composition, a print excellent in marring resistance and scratch resistance can be obtained.
