The present invention provides a thermoplastic resin composition which comprises: (i) at least one compatibilizing agent in an amount effective for compatibilization, (ii) (A) a polyphenylene ether in an amount of about 40 - 100% by weight based on the total amount of (A) and (B) and (B) a homopolymer of alkenyl aromatic compound or a random copolymer of alkenyl aromatic compound and unsaturated compound in an amount of 0-about 60% by weight based on the total amount of (A) and (B), the total amount of (A) and (B) being about 10% by weight or more based on total amount of all polymer components, (iii) at least one polyamide in an amount more than the amount required for forming a continuous phase, and (iv) a compound having a molecular weight of 2,000 or less, containing nitrogen element, and having ring opening or condensation polymerizability or reactivity with acid or amine.

A composition is prepared of, by wt, (I) 100 parts of a mixture of 5 to 100% of a polyphenylene ether or a mixture thereof with a styrene polyester, or a graft copolymer thereof and styrene and (b) 95 to 0% of a thermoplastic polyamide and/or saturated polyester resin; and optionally (II) 0 to 50 parts of a rubbery substance; (III) 0 to 50 parts of inorganic filler and/or glass fibers; and (IV) 0 to 10 parts of at least one of seven types of compatibilizer which improves compatibility of the polymers (I) (a) and (b). The production of these components is described. The components are mixed in any order and molded. The surface of the molded article, e.g. a film, plate or fibers, may be degreased and is irradiated with ultraviolet light of wavelength less than 300 nm, preferably 185 and 254 nm as main wavelengths, for 20 seconds to 10 minutes: The irradiation improves the coatability of the surface, which may then be coated with a coating of an alkyd-melamine or an acrylic urethane.

(A) 100 parts by weight of: (i) a resin composition comprising 5-95% by weight of a polyphenylene ether obtainable by oxidation polymerisation of at least one phenol compound represented by the formula: wherein R¹, R², R³, R⁴ and R⁵, which may be identical or different, each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group, and at least one of R¹ to R⁵ is a hydrogen atom, or (ii) a polyphenylene ether-based resin composition comprising said polyphenylene ether and a polystyrene, and 95-5% by weight of a polyamide resin; (B) 5 - 50 parts by weight of a saturated rubber obtainable by grafting 5 - 100 parts by weight of an aromatic vinyl compound onto 100 parts by weight of a saturated rubber and allowing 0.05 - 10 parts by weight of a compatibilising agent to react with said rubber, the grafting degree of said aromatic vinyl compound being 50% by weight or more; and (C) 0.05 - 20 parts by weight of a compatibilising agent.
