The innerliner (16) has a surface (14) exposed to an inner cavity of the tire (10) and a foam noise damper (18) disposed thereon. The foam noise damper (18) comprises a silicone rubber foam having a specific gravity in a range of from 0.01 to 0.4.

The present invention relates to a pneumatic tire having an air barrier layer, particularly an integral pneumatic tire innerliner (3), for prevention, or retardation, of air permeation from its inner chamber to the atmosphere through the carcass of the tire. The innerliner (3) is comprised of an annular, cylindrical, hoop of a film (3) having its ends overlapped and heat sealed together. The film (3) is comprised of a continuous thermoplastic polymer phase which contains a dispersion therein of cured rubber domains, particularly cured low unsaturation rubber domains. In one embodiment, one surface of the film (3) contains a thin bonding layer to aid in bonding the film to an unsaturated rubber-containing tire carcass. In one embodiment, the overlapping portion (5) of the ends of the film (3) have a thin rubber layer positioned therebetween.

In one embodiment, the pneumatic tire includes an outer circumferential rubber tread (14) and a supporting carcass (16). A rubber inner liner (20) is disposed inwardly from the supporting carcass. A built-in sealant layer (23) is situated adjacent an innermost gas permeable layer (24) and disposed inwardly from the rubber inner liner (20). The built-in sealant layer provides self-sealing properties to the pneumatic tire. The tire, with its innermost gas permeable layer, allows for elimination or reduction in blister formation in the tire.

A pneumatic tire (10) having a built-in sealant layer, before cure, includes an unvulcanized pneumatic tire assembly having an outer circumferential rubber tread (14) and a supporting carcass (16). A precursor sealant layer (23) is situated between the supporting carcass and an innermost rubber inner liner. The precursor sealant layer includes a non-flowing polyurethane composition that is neither gel-like nor tacky and is self-supporting. The precursor sealant layer, during curing of the unvulcanized pneumatic tire assembly, thermally degrades so as to provide a gel-like and tacky, self-healing polyurethane composition which defines the built-in sealant layer. The resulting tire, with its innermost polyurethane composition, allows for elimination or reduction in blister formation by reducing or elimination the amount of gases typically given off by organoperoxide-butyl based sealant layers, such as when the tire is at its running temperature.

This invention relates to a retreadable tire (1) which contains a non-black colored rubber carcass cushion layer (4A) sandwiched between its tire tread (2A) and tire casing (3). The non-black colored rubber carcass cushion layer acts both as an adhesive and transition layer for adhering a cured or uncured tire tread to the cured tire carcass. Such carcass cushion layer also acts as a detectable color indictor for indexing and monitoring a complete removal (e.g. by buffing, abrading, or cutting) of the circumferential rubber tire tread and partial removal of the carcass cushion layer without removing the entire carcass cushion layer. The invention also relates to a method of retreading a cured rubber tire carcass by completely removing a circumferential, carbon black reinforced (and therefor a black colored) tire rubber tread together with a partial removal of the contrastingly colored cured rubber carcass cushion layer to a depth indexed and/or determined by an automated rubber cushion layer color sensing means (8), or apparatus, followed by applying a non-black colored uncured circumferential rubber carcass cushion layer (4) and carbon black reinforced (therefore black colored) tire tread (2) thereon to form an assembly thereof and vulcanizing the assembly in a mold to form a retread tire (1).

A method and an apparatus for preparing a tire target surface (40) for installation of an electronic device (34) such as a transponder apparatus of the type comprising a transponder housing and an antenna is disclosed. The method includes the steps: identifying a tire target surface (40) having a footprint configured to receive the electronic device (34) thereagainst; positioning the tire target surface (40) in an accessible relationship to cleaning apparatus (42); and actuating the cleaning apparatus (42) to substantially eliminate undesired surface agents from the tire target surface (40). Relative movement between the cleaning apparatus (42) and the tire target surface (40) may be initiated to create the desired target surface shape, such as an annular configuration, and to facilitate a substantial purging of undesired surface agents from substantially all of the tire target surface (40).

At least the base cushion gum layer and the top cushion gum layer include a bis-imide in an effective amount to reduce reversion of the gum rubber composition during repair and during use.
