The molar excess of the acid chloride is used to reduce the occurrence of gelation in the product.

The bleach activator exhibits improved solubility, and reduced product separation when incorporated into a granular detergent composition. Also provided are granular detergent compositions comprising a detersive surfactant and the bleach activator extrudates. Methods for forming the extruded bleach activator particles are also provided.

A process for preparation of unsymmetrical acyclic imide bleach activators is provided. The compounds prepared by this process have formula (I) wherein R1 is a C7-C13 linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated alkyl group, R2 is a C1-C8 linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated alkyl group and R3 is a C1-C4 linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated alkyl group. The process comprises the steps of reacting an amide having formula (II) with a reactive acyl compound to form said imide; wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of R?1 and R3¿, and wherein said reactive acyl compound contains said R3 group when Y is R1 and contains said R1 group when Y is R3, wherein said reactive acyl group is preferably selected from the group of compounds consisting of carboxylic acid halides, carboxylic acid esters, and carboxylic acid anhydrides; and separating said imide from the reaction mixture.

N-alkyl polyhydroxyalkyl amines such as N-methyl glucamine having a Gardner Color of less than 1 are reacted with sources of fatty acyl groups such as methyl esters, anhydrides, and/or fatty acids that have greater than 98 % transmittance at 460 nm in organic hydroxy solvents such as methanol to prepare N-alkyl polyhydroxy amine amides with good color. The N-alkyl polyhydroxy amines can be purified by crystallization, and/or subjected to reductive bleaching, to provide superior color. The reaction is preferably carried out at low temperature for short periods of time and with low catalyst levels to minimize formation of cyclic products. The resulting amide product can be further purified by treatment with anionic and cationic exchange resins to remove soap and amine impurities. The anionic ion exchange resin can be readily regenerated by acidifying it followed by washing with an organic solvent.
