L'invention concerne des procédés permettant de moduler des processus utilisant comme médiateurs des récepteurs de rétinoïdes et recourant à des ligands qui présentent une affinité et une spécificité fortes pour ces récepteurs. On décrit notamment des ligands qui se révèlent plus sélectifs pour le récepteur du rétinioïde X que ne l'est l'acide rétinoïque (c'est-à-dire, les réxoïdes). L'invention porte aussi sur des ligands, autres que l'acide rétinoïque, dont on a découvert qu'ils peuvent induire des processus utilisant comme médiateur le récepteur de cet acide. Enfin, l'invention a trait à des procédés concernant la préparation de ces ligands, destinés aux récepteurs de rétinoïdes, à partir de composés facilement disponibles.

In accordance with the present invention, there are provided methods to modulate processes mediated by retinoid receptors, employing high affinity, high specificity ligands for such receptors. In one aspect of the present invention, there are provided ligands which are more selective for the retinoid X receptor than is retinoic acid (i.e., rexoids). In another aspect of the present invention, alternative ligands (other than retinoic acid) have been discovered which are capable of inducing retinoic acid receptor mediated processes. In yet another aspect, methods have been developed for the preparation of such retinoid receptor ligands from readily available compounds.
