A wax-free chewing gum is provided which uses a gum base which is devoid or substantially free of wax. The gum base includes about 20 to about 60 weight percent synthetic elastomer, 0 to about 30 weight percent natural elastomer, about 5 to about 55 weight percent elastomer plasticizer, about 4 to about 40 weight percent filler, about 5 to about 40 weight percent softener, and optional minor amounts of miscellaneous ingredients such as colors, antioxidants, etc. Wax-free chewing gum compositions which contain the wax-free gum base are also provided, which chewing gums further comprise flavoring agents and water-soluble bulk portions. The bulk portions contain controlled release sweeteners at least one of which provides a similar release profile to the release profile of at least one flavoring agent present in the chewing gums.

A method for producing a chewing gum with a controlled release active agent, as well as the chewing gum so produced, is obtained by physically modifying the release properties of the active agent by coating and drying. The active agent is coated by encapsulation, partially coated by agglomeration, entrapped by absorption, or treated by multiple steps of encapsulation, agglomeration, and absorption. The coated active agent is preferably then co-dried and particle sized to produce a release-modified active agent for use in chewing gum. The active agent may also be used in a coating on a chewing gum product, as part of a rolling compound applied to the chewing gum product, or as a part of the liquid in a liquid-center chewing gum product.

Improved chewing gum formulations and bases, as well as methods of producing chewing gum and bases are provided. The chewing gum includes polyglycerol esters. Polyglycerol esters can be used in the base and/or gum as a plasticizer, softener, and emulsifier. In an embodiment, polyglycerol esters are added to sucrose-type gum formulations replacing a small or large quantity of other fats, oils, and emulsifiers. A variety of base and chewing gum formulations including polyglycerol esters can be created and/or utilized pursuant to the present invention.

The present invention provides a method for refining peppermint oil containing compositions. Additionally, the present invention provides a method for making chewing gum having a peppermint flavor. To this end, a method for refining a peppermint oil containing composition that includes sulfur compounds to remove at least a portion of the sulfur compounds is provided. The method comprises the step of subjecting the composition to a distillation process that removes at least a portion of the sulfur compounds from the composition, but does not remove more than 3 % of the total composition.

A chewing gum product containing a cross-linked gelatin matrix gum base and a bulking agent of erythritol, mannitol, or mixtures thereof. The cross-linked gelatin matrix can make up all or a portion of the gum base and still be comparable to that of a traditional elastomeric chewing gum product in its elasticity, cohesiveness, and feel in the mouth. The chewing gum of the present invention is also more environmentally friendly because it can be digestible and partially replace the need for petroleum-derived elastomers.
