A continuous process for the synthesis of unsymmetrical, substituted diarylamines in which a mixture of a soluble catalyst dissolved in a substituted phenol and a primary arylamine are reacted at an elevated temperature and pressure in a reactor to form a reaction mixture comprising a substituted, unsymmetrical diamine, a diphenylamine, catalyst, unreacted primary arylamine, unreacted substituted phenol, water and ammonia, which is flash separated in a flash separator to a vapor phase containing the unreacted primary arylamine, unreacted substituted phenol, water and ammonia components while substituted, unsymmetrical diamine and diphenylamine components are maintained in a liquid phase. The vapor phase is removed from the flash separator, subjected to reduced pressure, cooled and fed into a second flash separator where the water and ammonia components are flash separated to vapor phase while the unreacted primary arylamine and unreacted substituted phenol are maintained in the liquid phase. The unreacted primary arylamine and unreacted substituted phenol are then removed from the second flash evaporator and recycled in the continuous process.

A polyarylidene compound, for example biphenyl, is reacted with iodine in the presence of an oxidant (e.g. ammonium persulfate), unreactive with the aromatic muc- leus, in a reaction medium containing a solvent (e.g. an organic acid) for the polyarylidene compound, a catalyst (e.g. a mineral acid) and water. The reaction medium is recovered for reuse in repeat diiodination, by the removal of spent oxidant which, in the preferred embodiment, is based upon the temperature dependent differences in solubility between the diiodo derivative and the spent oxidant.

There is disclosed a process for the production of unsymmetrical, substituted diarylamines by the reaction of a primary aromatic amine and a substituted phenol wherein the phenol is held in excess of the primary aromatic amine thereby minimizing by-product formation as a result of self-condensation of the primary arylamine. The desired secondary amine is produced in high yield and purity by recycling the unreated phenol.

Marking material (28), such as ink, toner, etc., is controllably introduced into the propellant stream (A) and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon the substrate (38). A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials (28C, 28M, 28Y, 28K) may be introduced into the channel (34) and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate (38), or mixed or superimposed on the substrate (38) without re-registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.
