In order to increase flexibility in terms of use and the functional security of said stepped automatic transmission, several groups (21, 22, 23) of control data sets (21a - 21h, 22a - 22h, 23a - 23h) are permanently stored on the data memory (20), each group (21, 22, 23) of control data sets being respectively embodied for a different drive train configuration and/or a different use of the motor vehicle, and the groups (21) of control data sets configured for the present drive train configuration and/or the present applicational use of the motor vehicle are authorised to be used and the remaining groups of control data sets (22, 23) are blocked from being used.
