The invention relates to a method for controlling the mechanical drive train system (2, 4, 6, 8) of a motor vehicle that is equipped with an automatic or automated gearbox (6) in combination with a stabilizing system (16) acting on the wheels (14). According to the invention, an electronic vehicle control device (18) allows shifting the gear (6) depending on standard driving conditions detected by sensors and controlling the stabilizing system (16) when non-standard driving conditions occur. In certain situations, it is disadvantageous to modify the prevailing torque of the drive train system, since such a modification could disadvantageously affect the simultaneously effective stabilizing system. In such cases, the invention provides for an alternative control programm of the vehicle control device to be used, which prevents the adoption of control measures taken by the vehicle control device (18) for changing the prevailing torque of the drive train system (2, 4, 6, 8). If the state of the drive train system does not allow the intervention of the stabilizing system, the drive train system is put in a state allowing such an intervention.

Rotational sensors detect the current rotational direction and additionally determine of the presence of a rotary motion. The rotation sensors permit numerous functions of the vehicle to be controlled in a simple manner and with the aid of various parameters obviate the need for the calculation of the rotational direction by way of the determination algorithms.

The invention relates to a method for controlling and regulating a transmission brake in a manual transmission which, for synchronizing, establishes a set rotational speed of a shaft to be synchronized starting from an actual rotational speed of a transmission shaft, and which controls and/or regulates a transmission brake whereby applying the established set rotational speed to the shaft to be synchronized. This method is characterized in that the control and regulation of the transmission brake is used beyond pure transmission synchronization in order to carry out additional drivetrain-relevant functions. These drivetrain-relevant functions are alike in that they manage without or with only minimal additional hardware requirements whereby, as a result, being virtually cost-neutral to implement. However, they substantially increase the functional scope and thus the practical value of the transmission brake. In particular, the comfort and the speed of shifting operations, the protection from or the recognition of error conditions in sensors, coupling, the drive clutch and engine control as well as the prevention of unwanted states of the transmission are considerably improved. In addition, the consideration and the beneficial influencing of previously unconsidered secondary conditions, such as in the operation of ancillary units, is possible.
