To use a monolithic silica body in chromatography with a HPLC column or a GC column and to simplify the use thereof as a separation medium, it is intended to provide a method of cladding a main body of a monolithic adsorbent or separating agent with glass so as to protect the outer surface, and to provide a separation medium prepared by the method. To this end, a monolithic silica body alone is formed by molding, and the molding is coated with a glass body; and then the glass body and the monolithic silica body are fused and integrated at the melting temperature of the glass body at an appropriate pressure. The surface of the resulting monolithic silica body clad with glass is strongly protected by the glass, and the homogeneity of the interior of the monolithic silica body is maintained, and thus uniform flow of a sample solution ensures analytical accuracy.

An object of the present invention is to provide a sample trapping method and a sample trapping apparatus. The present invention is suitable, for example, for analysis by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. A sample is not cooled by a refrigerant such as liquid nitrogen in the present invention. Instead, a cold storage refrigerator such as a Stirling refrigerator or a Gifford-McMahon refrigerator is used. As a result, the operability is improved and the running cost is reduced. In addition, a refrigerant pipe is not used in the present invention. It is thus possible to reduce the size and weight of the apparatus, to improve the efficiency and accuracy for cooling the sample, and to rapidly cool the sample. Furthermore, it is possible to rapidly heat the sample. As a result, the trapped sample is instantaneously desorbed. Therefore, the present invention makes it possible to achieve cryofocusing in gas chromatography (particularly in high-speed gas chromatography). Solutions of the present invention include a sample trapping method using a sample conduit for trapping a gas sample by cooling or desorbing the gas sample by heating. The solutions further include cooling a sample conduit (17) by arranging the sample conduit (17) in the vicinity of, or bringing the sample conduit (17) into contact with, a cooling part of a cooling device (20) based on a cold storage refrigerator.

In the field of substance separation which uses the flow of a fluid, it is necessary to reduce the inside diameter of a separation column in order to meet the tendency to reduce the volume of an organic solvent used. The smaller the volume of a target sample which is caused to flow, the higher the concentration of the target sample, thereby permitting a high-sensitivity analysis. For this purpose, it is necessary to reduce the diameter of a separation column. Therefore, the manufacturing of such a separation column is difficult and besides the separation column becomes apt to fracture. Therefore, the separation column is fabricated as a double-wall tube constituted by an outer tube and an inner tube in such a manner that the outer tube is separated so as to be freely inserted and extracted. Furthermore, a union is fitted to the end of the outer tube by use of a screw thereby to prevent torsions between the outer tube and the inner tube and strains and, at the same time, to eliminate a space for a dead volume.
