Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument comprising an end effector is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw. At least one of the first jaw and the second jaw is movable to transition the end effector from an open configuration to a closed configuration to grasp tissue therebetween. The second jaw comprises linear portions cooperating to form an angular profile and a treatment surface comprising segments extending along the angular profile. The segments comprise different geometries and different conductivities. The segments are configured to produce variable energy densities along the treatment surface.

Abstract: A tissue removal system for extracting a tissue specimen from a patient is disclosed. The system has a retrieval bag, a first electrode, and a return electrode. The retrieval bag has a flexible container with an opening. The first electrode is coupled to an interior of the flexible container, and has a conductive wire with an exposure area, a first load-bearing area, a coating having a first active electrode surface area, and an impedance that is greater than an impedance of the conductive wire. The first active electrode surface area is less than the exposure area. The coating is configured to degrade during application of electrosurgical power and wherein the degradation expands the first active electrode surface area during the application of the electrosurgical power.

Abstract: An electrode for an electrosurgical pencil comprises an elongated body made of a conductive material and extending in an axial direction from a proximal end to a distal end. The proximal end is configured for engaging the electrosurgical pencil. The distal end forms a blade configured for cutting or coagulation of tissue by electrosurgical energy received from the electrosurgical pencil. The blade is defined by two main surface portions on opposite sides of an intermediate plane and joined by an edge extending through the intermediate plane. The edge comprises a smooth-part. The main surface portions have a first surface roughness. The smooth-part of the edge has a second surface roughness being lower than the first surface roughness. At least the main surface portions are covered by a surface coating. The smooth-part of the edge is un-coated. The first surface roughness is in a range of 2.0 Ra to 4.0 Ra, and the second surface roughness is less than 1.0 Ra. A method of making the electrode is also disclosed.
