A glazing comprises a glass substrate having an enamel layer adhered to at least a first surface portion, the enamel comprising 20 to 80 wt % frit and 10 to 50 wt % inorganic pigment. The thickness of the enamel layer is 2 μm to 50 μm, and the inorganic pigment has an infra-red reflectance such that the infra-red reflectance of the first portion of the glass substrate surface is 37% or higher over a region in the wavelength range 800 nm to 2250 nm. The glazing may be laminated, and may be a vehicle windscreen. A process for producing the glazing involves applying ink to a glass substrate, curing the ink thereby producing an enamel adhered to the glass substrate, and shaping the glass substrate by heating to a temperature above 570° C. The preferred inorganic pigments are of the Fe and/or Cr type in spinel, haematite or corundum crystal form.

A sintered machinable glass-ceramic is provided. The machinable glass-ceramic is formed by mixing phyllosilicate material having a sheet structure, with a glass fit and firing the mixture at relatively low temperatures to sinter the phyllosilicate, while maintaining the sheet-like morphology of the phyllosilicate and its associated cleaving properties. The sintered machinable glass-ceramic can be machined with conventional metal working tools and includes the electrical properties of the phyllosilicate. Producing the sintered machinable glass-ceramic does not require the relatively high-temperature bulk nucleation and crystallization needed to form sheet phyllosilicate phases in situ.

The present invention provides a new and improved lead-free and cadmium-free glass enamel composition that displays good flow at traditional glass enamel firing temperatures and upon firing produces an enamel finish that displays no cracking, good chemical resistance, good weatherability, and improved color values. The glass enamel composition of the present invention includes a glass component, an oxidizer, a pigment system, and optional vehicles and fillers. The presence of the oxidizer in the composition, which can be included as part of the glass component, as a separately added material, or both, improves the color values of the fired enamel as compared to enamels formed using similar glass enamel compositions having no oxidizer present.
