Abstract: A spinal correction system is disclosed which comprises an expandable trial implant which is movable between a compressed position and an expanded position; a neural release system; a load and contact system; a neural spacing monitoring system; and a plurality of load cells for monitoring a load on the expandable trial implant. The expandable trial implant is adapted to be disposed in an intervertebral disc space after removal of a portion of the disc tissue. The load cells are arranged to communicate with the load and contact system to provide information about the load on the expandable trial implant as it is being expanded in the disc space. The load and contact system is arranged to provide information representing the load information to the neural release system, and the neural release system arranged to compare the load information to a load threshold and to indicate when the load information exceeds the load threshold. The neural spacing monitoring system is arranged to provide information representative of a neural foramen spacing of a neural foramen located proximate the intervertebral disc space to the neural release system, and the neural release system arranged to compare the information representative of the neural foramen spacing to a predefined foramen spacing parameter, to determine whether to remove more of the disc.

Abstract: An expandable implant includes a body portion, a carriage portion, a deployment assembly, and an expandable portion. The deployment assembly and the expandable portion are attached to the carriage portion, and portions of the carriage portion are moveable out of and into the body portion. When the expandable implant is inserted into a disc space, the expandable portion is expandable to push the upper vertebral body and the lower vertebral body away from one another.

Abstract: An implant is insertable in the joint space to separate bones of the joint. The implant has two endplates each configured to engage a separate articulating bone of the joint, and a threaded member positioned between the two endplates and configured to increase the space between the two endplates when the threaded member is rotated. A rotatable gear is engaged with the threaded member, and is engageable with a rotating gear of a connected implantation tool, so that rotation of the gear on the tool causes rotation of the threaded member and expansion of the implant to separate the bones. Connector portions on the tool and the implant may be rotated together to securely engage the implant and the tool so that the gears of the tool and the implant can be rotated using an actuator outside of the body, when the implant is inside the body.

Abstract: Disclosed is a medical device having a substrate having an exposed surface and a texture over at least part of the exposed surface. The texture includes a plurality of nanofeatures that inhibit bacterial adhesion on the surface and that also inhibit bacterial growth on the surface and have a size range between about 0.01 nanometers and about 1,000 nanometers. The texture can include a plurality of nanofeatures applied thereto such that the texture has a first particle size at a first location, a second particle size at a second location, and a gradient of particle size from the first particle size to the second particle size between the first location and the second location.
