A fluid management system for use in a tissue resection procedure includes a controller. An inflow pump is operated by the controller and configured to provide fluid inflow through a flow path to a site in patient's body. An outflow pump is operated by the controller and configured to provide fluid outflow through a flow path from the site in patient's body. A motor driven resecting device may be provided for resecting tissue at the site. The controller is configured to actuate an inflow pump and an outflow pump in response to various signals and various algorithms are provided to provide malfunction warnings and assure safe operation.

After genetic diagnosis or sex determination or gene therapy, or any combination of any two or more of them, of the recovered embryos and selection of at least one of the embryos to be implanted, the selected embryos are returned to the woman for implantation in her uterus.

An embryo transfer catheter (10) is described comprising an outer catheter body (12) having first and second lumens (14, 16). The second lumen (16) is adapted to receive an internal catheter (not shown) with a single lumen which, in use, will allow passage of an embryo or embryo-containing cannula (not shown) into the uterus (18) of the recipient. An inflatable balloon (20) is provided at a distal end of the first lumen (14). The inflatable balloon (20) is designed to be as small as possible in its inflated condition while still being retained in the uterus (18). The shape of the balloon (20) is adapted in its inflated state to conform to just the lowest part of the uterus (18). The aim in designing the balloon (20) as small as possible is to leave as much endometrium accessible to the embryo for implantation as possible, and to occupy as little volume as possible within the uterine cavity and to exert as little pressure as possible to avoid causing contractions, while still being retained in the uterus (18).

The apparatus comprises a hub (14) including a proximal end portion (16) adapted for removable attachment to a solution source (22) and a distal end portion (18) adapted for removable attachment with a catheter (28). A lumen (20) having a variable diameter extends between the hub proximal and distal end portions configured to create the Venturi effect, in which a vacuum is created. The vacuum draws air through an airflow passage (42) and into the hub lumen (20) where it mixes with a saline solution flowing therethrough to create a mixture of air bubbles in saline. The contrast image crated by the air bubbles in saline allows the uterus and fallopian tubes to be sonographically visualized.

In some examples, the support member can include an expandable stent of a suitable length and uniform diameter to be inserted in a non-dilated cervical canal or transabdominal access route. In various examples, the apparatus further includes a fluid-resistant fabric, polymer, substance or other material placed over at least the top portion of the support member.
