A rotating processor (10) is disclosed. The apparatus (10) includes a hollow enclosed rotor (12), a rotor drive (104), internal space (24) to hold particulate porous reaction or separations media which may be porous, lines (40) connecting the center and periphera of the internal space with the exterior the through fluid line seals, valuing to control fluid flow, gradient makers, and a microprocessor to control and monitor the entire system. Optionally the rotor (12) may be spun with the axis vertical or horizontal, and may be used as a conventional column at rest. The rotating processor (10) permits any synthetic or separative process utilizing particulate or solid phase supports, or separations involving phases of different density to be accomplished under conditions which facilitate precise control of fluid flow and minimization of both micro- and macro-anomalous flow. A computer-controlled flat multiport valve system is also described to facilitate programmed scheduling of reagents through the rotor (12). Also disclosed are a process of synthesizing a polymer using the rotor (12) and a process of separating molecules using the processor (10).

The methods are based on the use of in situ photogenerated reagents such as photogenerated acids, photogenerated bases, or any other suitable chemical compounds that produce active reagents upon light radiation. The present invention describes devices and methods for performing a large number of parallel chemical reactions without the use of a large number of valves, pumps, and other complicated fluidic components. The present invention provides microfluidic devices that contain a plurality of microscopic vessels for carrying out discrete chemical reactions. Other applications may include the preparation of microarrays of DNA and RNA oligonucleotides, peptides, oligosacchrides, phospholipids and other biopolymers on a substrate surface for assessing gene sequence information, screening for biological and chemical activities, identifying intermolecular complex formation, and determining structural features of molecular complexes.

A system and method for examining chemical reactions, especially catalysed polymerisation reactions, uses an array of apparatuses (2) within a nitrogen filled glove box (42). A multi-pipetting robot (40) is arranged to deliver measured amounts of materials (e.g. catalyst components) to mixing vessels (24) which in turn are arranged to deliver the components to reactors (4) into which other components (e.g. monomer gases) are fed. A range of variables for reactions undertaken in apparatuses (2) are controlled by a computer (45) which also stores data relating to reactions effected in a database. A library of products can be made using the system under carefully controlled and reproducible conditions and parameters affecting the properties of products produced can be investigated.

The present invention is concerned with methods of producing fabricated arrays comprising clusters of clonal copies of one or more target molecules. In particular the invention relates to methods comprising providing clonal copies of a single target molecule within a vesicle or on the surface of a solid support within a chamber defined by a vesicle in contact with a solid support to produce clonal copies thereof and immobilising the copies on the solid support.
