Initially, all of the compartments (203, 203', 203''...) on the transfer surface (201) are set to the first wetting behaviour, before selected compartments (205, 205', 205''...) are subsequently configured for the second wetting behaviour. Then, the transfer surface (201) is brought into contact with the supply surface (301), whereby the selected compartments (205, 205', 205''...) receive transfer fluid (302) from the supply surface (301). After the transfer surface (201) has been removed from the supply surface (301), the transfer surface (201) is positioned above the target surface (101).
