The invention concerns a tool for machining workpieces, in particular a cutting insert, having a plurality of groove-like and/or raised machining elements which are disposed along the cutting edge (11) and adjacent one another in a row. The machining elements also have an elongate extension with a longitudinal axis defined thereby. At least in the vicinity of the cutting edge, the machining surface has a microstructure in the form of imbricated scales, the individual scales (12, 23 to 25) being arranged immediately adjacent one another. According to the invention, the scales (12, 23 to 25) comprise comb-like, curved apex lines (121) which form an angle (nue) of between 55° and -5° towards the cutting edge (11) with the cutting edge normals to the machining surface. The scales (12, 23 to 25) each have a cross-section which is parallel to the cutting edge and which has a steeper flank (122) and a flatter flank (123), each flatter flank (123) lying on the side facing the centre of curvature. The invention further concerns a boring tool equipped with said cutting inserts.
