Preferably, the pressure to which the material is exposed is less than or equal to about 400 torr. An improved apparatus for embossing expanded graphite sheet material (102) at a pressure less than atmospheric pressure comprises: at least one embossing device; at least one compression device (112) adapted to urge the embossing device (104) against the material; an embossing chamber (110) comprising the at least one embossing device and adapted to receive the material, and to be substantially gas-tight at least when the embossing device is urged against the material by the pressing device; and an evacuation device for reducing the pressure within the embossing chamber. The atmosphere within the embossing chamber may comprise an inert gas, such as, for example, nitrogen, helium and argon.

A powder pressing apparatus comprises an upper punch (16) and a lower punch for compression of a powder in a cavity formed in a through hole (12) of a die (14). A gap between a side surface of the lower punch (18) and a side surface of the through hole (12) of the die (14) is sealed by a sealing member. A lubricant is supplied with a gas from a nozzle in the side surface of the lower punch (18) to the side surface of the through hole, and the lubricant applied to the side surface of the through hole (12) is spread by an absorbing member (48). The cavity is filled with the powder while the cavity is under suction by a reduced pressure provided from the nozzle in the side surface of the lower punch. During the suction, a filtering member provides filtration for the lower punch not to draw the powder in.

A thermally insulated VIP sandwich shipper for a temperature sensitive payload is provided. The shipper comprises an outer shell, an inner shell and vacuum insulated panels sandwiched therebetween. The outer shell and the inner shell may be unitary rigid structures made of an expanded foam material and comprising a bottom having a perimeter and sides extending from the bottom perimeter and terminating in a rim. The inner shell rim may be spaced from the outer shell rim to define a gap, the gap being sealed to create an enclosed space within which the vacuum insulated panels are located. Each vacuum insulated panel may be oriented substantially orthogonally to at least one adjacent vacuum insulated panel and have an edge that abuts the adjacent vacuum insulated panels.

A conventional injection moulding process is modified in order to improve the quality of moulding in respect of the surface finish of one side of the moulding (1.16), reduce moulded-in stress and thereby reduce tendency to warp, and with increased scope for adding additional design features. This is achieved by the injection of a controlled amount of gas into the mould cavity to form a film (1.11) or layer of gas between one side of the mould cavity (1.12) and the adjacent skin of the substantially molten plastic (1.13) during or after filling of the mould with the plastic. This enables pressure to be exerted on the plastic by the gas of which the pressure is controlled from an external source (1.15). This invention includes methods of sealing the gas within the mould to prevent leakage thereby enabling the gas pressure to be controlled. The invention also includes methods of pressuring localised protrusions from the moulding general wall such as pillars, bosses, webs, ribs etc.
